Project summary: (Max 300 words)
COVID 19 Epidemic and flood disaster has seriously hit and affected the young nation,
The death toll from the coronavirus in South Sudan has risen and keep increasing especially in the Rural areas
where the vaccine for COVID 19 have not reached. most of the people in Juba city and states in South Sudan have
not received the vaccines and they are severely attacked by the virus since they are not following the expected
prevention and mitigation measures that can protect them from the disease.
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Some patients may have aches
and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea. The disease can spread from person to person
through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales
etc.
In addition to COVID 19 Disaster Response, the community is also severely affected by flood in many parts of
the countries.
Moderate to heavy continuous seasonal rains, which started in early between August and October in many parts
of South Sudan, have continued to be received across the country causing flood emergencies. The effect of the
floods has led to a deterioration in the state of the already vulnerable populations leaving these populations in dire
need of basic and crucial services as indicated by various assessments
Project rationale: (Max 200 words)

South Sudan has confirmed more than hundreds of cases of the novel coronavirus, raising the tally of positive test
high. News of the virus has spread quickly throughout the South Sudan and the rest of the countries in the entire
world. In most of the rural areas in South Sudan, there is no awareness of how the virus should be treated. There is
also a lack of clarity on how to identify infection and whether there is an accurate medication apart from vaccine
which is not even available in most of the rural/villages as well as urban arears in South Sudan.
It is alarming of a nation. On the other hand, there is rarely Medicine/treatment about evil COVID- 19 diseases.
For this, the organization has taken many kinds of programs to prevent COVID-19. Because prevention is better
than cure. Our aim is to raise general awareness particularly young, student, adolescent, mass peoples, overseas
migrant workers etc. to reducing the spread of COVID-19.

The flooding situation in unity state has severely affected many vulnerable people and has resulted in massive

displacement affecting particularly children, mothers and the elderly who are now facing serious hunger, health
and protection risks in an area already receiving little to no humanitarian assistance due to insecurity and conflict.
The floods have destroyed food reserves and threatened food markets. Displaced, affected households are
exposed and living in makeshift shelters made of cloth and sticks. Mothers, children, and the elderly are at a high
risk of hunger and illness such as Water-borne diseases such as cholera, which could easily erupt and spread
quickly. Stagnant waters form a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and this could result in a malaria outbreak.
Additionally, Socioeconomic activities of communities have also been disrupted leaving the affected population
vulnerable without sources of income

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Operational Context (Max 500 words)

Koch County is located in Unity State. It borders Mayom County to the north-west, Rubkona County to
the north, Guity County to the north-east and Mayendit County to the south. It also borders Jonglei State
(Fangak and Ayod Counties) to the east and Warrap State (Tonj North County) to the west. The River
Nile flows northwards along the county’s eastern border with Jonglei State. The economic and livelihood
of the community depend on farming and livestock.

Agency Background and Experience (Max 300 words)

Action Aid Intervention for Development Organization (AAIDO) is a Non-political, non-profit and Non-
Government Voluntary Development Organization formed with the initiatives of a few committed and
dedicated social workers. Action Aid Intervention for Development Organization (AAIDO) established in
2019 and fully registered on 26th November 2020, with an aim to promoting human and socio-economic
development for the under privileged people living in rural area. To achieve the aim, AAIDO organizes
the rural people who are living in poverty to improve their livelihood, the organization was initiated and
has been supporting the community to improve socio- economic condition of rural & urban communities
as well as dissemination of information about the community livelihood and economic development.
AAIDO is based on the conviction the paramount need of the men/women/ Children both urban and rural
is not relief but release from the prison of poverty its main focus is to promote the socio-economic
conditions of the under-privileged, distillates landless and economically poor people especially women
through Organization, Education, Training, Participation and joint activities.

Needs Assessment and Problem to Addressed (Max 300 words)

The most recent peace agreement was signed in 2018 and has largely held, though there are ongoing
reports of serious armies’ group and local conflicts. Not having enough food, or clean water to wash your
hands, makes the coronavirus one of many devastating threats to families in South Sudan especially the
rural villages.
South Sudan's healthcare system is under strain, with a country of 12 million people but only one
permanent infectious disease unit - with fewer than 100 beds – and one laboratory testing for coronavirus.
The pandemic has had a knock-on effect on young, middle ages and older people with no income and
limited access to essentials including food and water. With our partners, AAIDO and other implementing
partners, we adapted our existing programmes in local rural village in Koch and other counties in Unity
state to keep people safe by supporting their ’s needs during the pandemic and ensure those needs are met.

Moreover, Assistance to the flood-affected populations is ongoing and gradually scaling up, organizations
clusters in South Sudan have reported significant gaps regarding food assistance, emergency shelter, non-
food items (NFI), safe drinking water and construction of latrines. There is also a need to decontaminate
shallow wells, establish mosquito and vector control and provide services to prevent Gender-Based
Violence and provide child-friendly spaces.
Summary of Priority Needs (Max 300 words)

To date, the number of cases of COVID-19 in South Sudan keeps increasing day by day, with more than
hundreds of deaths and fewer recoveries, and with limited humanitarian and developmental support to
deal with the impact.
AAIDO purposes of the grant request through this proposal is to address the impact of COVID-19 and
flood affected community as a priority, contribute to poverty reduction and enhance diversified economic
growth. All these efforts should be accompanied by strict monitoring and evaluating the project, integrity,
transparency and accountability.
We’re providing community outreach volunteers who regularly visit the most affected and vulnerable
people in the community, including housebound older people, to ensure they have access to the
information, food, clean water, and hygiene items they need. We recruited and trained girls, women and
few men people in the community as volunteers, as well as sign language interpreters.

you are supporting local organisations who have on-the-ground expertise to tackle coronavirus and help more
families survive.

We are working together to deliver vital hygiene messages via radio, and even via megaphones in hard-to-
reach areas. Community groups are translating these messages into local languages so that they can be heard
and understood by as many people as possible. Local health volunteers have been trained, who share correct
hygiene information.

We’re supporting households that need to isolate with food deliveries, so they don’t need to come out of the
household to work to provide food for themselves.

Together we’ve set up handwashing stations in markets, schools and health centres, so communities can keep
safe. Hand sanitisers have also been distributed, and households have received soap, buckets for water
storage and face masks.

We are also working with women’s groups to protect wives, mothers and girlfriends from the risk of domestic
violence during lockdown and working to provide access to counselling and other services.
