Carl Linnaeus

Carl Linnaeus was born on May 23rd 1707 in Sweden, and died in 1778. Carl Linnaeus
often called the father of taxonomy was well known for his system for naming ranking and
classifying organisms. This system was called the binomial system and is still in wide use
today. His ideas of classification have influenced many biologists in his time and after he
died.

Carl’s binomial system was basically so that organisms were classified and name so
that no two organisms had the same name he did this by changing a 1 word Latin name in to
a 2 word Latin name for example Equus to Equus coballus. In those times Latin was a
language at European universities and understood by nearly all educated people. The
organisms in the binomial system are described in much detail with two names the genus
and the species name, so it is easier to avoid confusion between different organisms.
