Problem Set 18.1: Buffer Calculations

As another reminder, these problems should only be used in conjunction with suggested Ch. 18
textbook problems and PowerPoint examples. The questions on this problem set are basic "drill"-
type problems for extra practice. Use Ka and Kb values from the Ch. 17 tables.

**Write net-ionic equations for each question, even if you use the H-H equation.

1. What is the pH of a solution that is 0.1 M in acetic acid and 0.3 M in sodium acetate?

2. What is the pH of a solution that is 0.10 M in ammonia and 0.20 M in ammonium chloride?

3. Calculate the pH of a buffer made by mixing 200. mL of 0.10 M HF and 300. mL of 0.15 M
NaF.

4. If 0.020 moles of solid NaOH is added to 2.0 L of a buffer solution which is 0.10 M in acetic
acid and 0.10 M in sodium acetate, what will be the pH? Assume no change in volume.

5. If 0.030 moles of HCl is added to 200. mL of a buffer containing 0.20 moles of ammonia and
0.25 moles of ammonium chloride what will be the pH? Assume no change in volume.

6. How many moles of ammonium chloride must be used to prepare 300. mL of a buffer
solution that is 0.10 M in ammonia and has a pH of 11.00?

7. Calculate the number of grams of NaCN that must be used to prepare 1.0 liter of a buffer
solution that is 0.10 M in HCN, and has a pH of 6.50.

8. What is the pH of a buffer solution containing 0.20 moles of HOCl and 0.15 moles of NaOCl
in 500. mL after 200. mL of 0.50 M HCl solution is added?

9. What is the pH of problem 8 if 200. mL of 0.50 M NaOH is added in place of the HCl?

10. A buffer is 0.10 M in ammonia and 0.10 M in ammonium chloride. To 500. ml of the buffer
solution, 0.060 moles of HCl is added. What is the pH? Assume no change in volume.

11. 0.2 moles of NaOH is added to 1 liter of a buffer containing 0.1 moles of acetic acid and 0.1
moles of sodium acetate. What is the pH?

12. What is the hydronium ion concentration of a solution that is 0.13 M in HCN and 0.20 M in
KCN?

13. What compound could be added to a 0.1 M HCOOH solution to make a buffer solution?
