INTRODUCTION
ECOPUR is a subsidiary company of VEOLIA ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES (SARP
entity) located in France. ECOPUR developped innovative treatment and recycling
concept applied to fatty wastes and sandy wastes coming from sanitation works
cleaning.
LIPOVAL process is able to separate a fatty concentrate LIPOFIT from fatty wastes.
This biofuel is regularly used in industrial furnaces as a substitute of coal, heavy oils …
LIPOVAL was selected for the new plant in Hong Kong destinated to treat 100,000
tons/year of fatty wastes coming from restaurants, catering shops and food industries.

Grease trap waste (GTW) is a mixture usually composed of triglycerides, water, proteins
and minerals. GTW has three main sources: urban waste water treatment plant, food
industries and grease trays from restaurants.
Grease trap waste (GTW) has the following sources and compositions(see
annexe 3):
Sources Composition range

2. Collection Steps
• Appointment
The collection of waste can be required by making appointments. All clients should
show the nature of the waste and the number of acceptance.
• Truck delivery
A document including:
- Precise nature of the waste (eg fat food, or station, or industrial ...),
-Structure pumped
-Name or company, and the activity of the producer,
address instead of pumping (and not the billing address)
-Number of acceptance.
is required to show for each waste in the tank upon arrival of the delivery trucks.
Waste is collected by vacuum trucks (10-20T)
A sample is taken before any off-loading and is analysed by ECOPUR laboratory. This
check only takes a few minutes.
The rules of off-loading clarify for each site and each waste. The different steps of
offloading should follow different instructions including safety respect.
Before the first off-loading, a security protocol for off-loading has been established.

3. Collection Organization
ECOPUR asks his clients to complete and return a request form to open an account.
The clients can receive an access code which allows them to upload identification
documents used for the collection and send them by mail to ECOPUR, once completed
by clients:
Then ECOPUR will confirm his clients new account and will return:
• A copy of the security protocol of offloading and Ecopur sales conditions (to
access this document, you must be logged in as a client), validated by us.
• A certificate of acceptance for waste not subject to specific acceptance
(restaurant grease tanks, sludge from sewage public networks or household,
road sweepings).

4. Process Description
4.1 Treatment Principle
Reference sheet:
• Centrifugation and Filtration of the phase coming from the mixing tank. This
separation gives the following products:
- Water with less than 0.1 % grease and 1% solids sent to water treatment unit
- Sludge with more than 65% dry matter sent to disposal
- Intermediate product (LIPOFIT E) with less than 4.3 % water sent to the
demineralisation after filtration.
Reference sheet :
GTW collected by tank is offloaded and screened in order to remove the solids
from the waste. (Solids are routed to incinerator)

• the aqueous phase is transferred by pump P102 into water storage before
biological treatment (DAF+ activated sludge reactor). The remaining grease
and sludge phases are mixed and then sent to centrifuge G101 by pump P102.
(A dilacerator N102 is installed upstream the pump). The mixture is firstly
heated to ~60°C by water coming from centrifuge in heater E101, and then
heated up to 80°C by hot water in heater E102.
• 1 horizontal 3 phases Centrifuge (G 101) is used to separate the products into
3 phases :
- an aqueous phase collected into tank T103 and then sent by pump P103
to the biological water treatment unit
- a heavy sludge phase collected by gravity into a container before
disposal
- a light phase containing less than 2% water collected into tank T104 and
then sent by pump P104 to the demineralisation tank T105 after filtration
(self-cleaning filter F101)
After reaction, the product is sent again to centrifuge G101 to separate mineral
solids from LIPOFIT which is now called LIPOFIT D. It is the final product and it
is sent through filter F101 to storage tank T106.
All tanks, vessels for grease or water/grease mixtures and piping system are traced
,heated and insulated. The tanks are installed in the retentions. All vents are
collected and sent to the deodorisation unit.

over 250°C in presence of oxygen.
When it is hot, LIPOFIT E has a bitter or pungent odour, that can be irritating, due to volatile fatty acids. A
mask covering mouth and nose is recommended. In case of contact with skin or another body part, cleaning
with tepid water and soap is recommended.
