and Procedures
Before the Cyclone
- Understand the strength of the cyclone that is anticipated.
- Monitor the warnings and alerts put out by the Meteorological department.
- Evacuate if told by authorities.
- Arrange supplies such as first aid kit, life jackets, candles, medicines, packed food, drinking water
batteries, credit cards and cash.
- Arrange a safe room that can be used during the cyclone.
- Clear the rain gutter and downspouts.
- Ensure that the walls and roofs of your house are strong enough.
- Ensure that you pack masks and sanitizers.
- Ensure that you keep the list of emergency phone numbers.
- Replace metal shutters instead of glass windows.
- Keep the cell phones charged for emergency communication.
- Make an emergency plan that involves an evacuation and review your important documents.
- Know your evacuation zone in case the storm gets bad.
- Prepare for your pets and elderlies at home.
- Get your personal vehicle ready for an emergency – fill it up with fuel and keep a copy of your documents
in it along with a survival kit.
- Understand your insurance policies if you have subscribed to one.
During the Cyclone
- Keep yourself updated about the cyclone and take actions respectively.
- Stay in the strongest part of your house.
- Drink boiled water.
- Rely only on an official warnings/announcements.
- If the warning is clear of a need for an evacuation, grab your survival kit, documents and phone and
proceed to your designated evacuation zone immediately.
- Given the ongoing COVID – 19 pandemic, always remember to keep at least 2 pairs of masks and sanitisers
handy when moving to an evacuation zone.
- Given the pandemic, advised to maintain social distancing at all times.
- Turn off gas supplies and electrical sources and appliances.
- Use flashlights during a storm, advised to avoid candles.
- Use phone battery judiciously.
- Do not allow children to play in flooded areas. They are more prone to diseases.
- Determine how best to protect yourself, your pets and elderly if the storm gets worse.
- Use thick blankets to protect yourself if the building starts to collapse.
- If trapped in a building, go to the highest point of the building to avoid being trapped by rising water
levels.
- Do not attempt to walk, swim or drive through gushing water.
- If water levels are high try to look for areas that are of lower levels.
- Seek a safe shelter as soon as possible.

After the Cyclone


- Pay close attention to local officials and information given by them.
- It is advised to stay indoors.
- Do not use wet electrical gadgets and appliances.
- Examine the gas supplies/leaks.
- Do not enter floodwaters.
- Do not enter damaged buildings.
- Leave your house and move to an open area especially if your house is badly damaged.
- Pets should be taken care. Keep bug sprays handy.
- Wear dry long sleeves, trousers and socks to avoid bug bites.
- Always try to maintain personal hygiene especially with the ongoing COVID – 19 pandemic.
- Try to use flash lights till it is notified that it is safe to use the mains.
- Try to avoid Carbon Monoxide poisoning by keeping a check on leaking batteries.
- Avoid using flammable fuels inside your shelter.
- Avoid eating any food that may have had contact with flood water.
- Use your safety kit to treat cuts, wounds or burns.
