SAYING A SONG
A LITTLE HISTORY OF PEOPLE POWER

"Ang Bayan Ko" by Freddie Aguilar

The song was labeled seditious after President

Marcos declared martial law in 1972. Violators
might face arrest and jail if they performed the song
in public. At Senator Benigno Aquino Jr.'s funeral in
1983, and the People Power Revolution that
followed in 1986, people were inspired to sing it.
The song has been associated with anti-government
protests since the 1986 Revolution that ousted the
Marcos dictatorship and ushered in the Fifth
Republic.

MODULE 1 PART - A
THE SONG OF "ANG BAYAN KO"

- "Ang Bayan Ko" was composed in 1928 and was originally written as a poem
by Jose Corazon de Jesus, with music by Constancio de Guzman. And in 1986,
the POST-EDSA 1 REVOLUTION, or so-called People Power, where Freddie
Aguilar led crowds in singing.
- The interior of this contents is written as a protest song against the Marcos
administration, a nonviolent and bloodless protest. "Ang Bayan Ko" is the title
of the song (My Country). It focuses on the experiences of people and what
the country's history was like back then, as described in the song lyrics.
In the first paragraph, it expresses the
optimistic view of the country as a whole. It
emphasizes where the people were born and

raised, the land that everyone in the country
loved. It means that it's like saying "this
country is ours, we are born to this culture."
Which is far from being a country of slaves,
and the lyrics have freedom. It is a rich
country, and most of the Filipinos are very
proud to be in that country. Despite the fact
that they are surrounded by their country's
natural beauty,
their situation is on the verge of being

devastated, as the lovely country in the hands
of the Filipinos will result in catastrophe. It's
as if it's demonstrating that whenever good
things happen in our lives, there's always an
equivalent for bad ones.
In the second paragraph, this is the beginning
of the colonization of the foreign country
because of the beautiful and poignant scenery
in the country. The lyrics show how the

2ND PARAGRAPH
Philippines was colonized and captured by
foreign people because of the natural beauty of
the Philippines. The Filipinos showed happiness
that they saw many foreigners beautifying our
country, but because of the unexpected, the
Filipinos became blind and ignorant to
foreigners' actions, and the Filipinos who fell
into misery became captives.
The Filipinos were enslaved by colonists

2ND PARAGRAPH
because the many representations depicted the
Philippines' beauty. It tells the history of how
foreigners colonized the country. The situation
described in the paragraph is how Filipino
servitude developed and became the root cause
of the problem.
Third paragraph / stanza, it shows Suffering
manifests itself in a variety of ways. The birds
that are naturally free to fly whenever they
want will be allowed to freely fly, but this line

3RD PARAGRAPH
shows that birds are not free to do what they
want or whatever they want to do. The bird
represents the people, or the Filipinos, because
the bird is free to fly. The same with human
beings. On the other hand, they have the
freedom to do human work and freedom of
speech that must be respected by all human
beings.
As a matter of fact, they must first obtain
authorization from the officials. Like during
Martial Law, people were not allowed to voice
their opinions and criticisms against the

government and various programs, thus many
probihited during the time. This stanza, the
emotion and situation of the lyrics is they are
crying and enslaved Filipinos demand freedom,
seeking loss of location and the land of their
home land. Filipinos cannot afford to ignore the
fact that their beloved country, the Philippines,
has no freedom against foreigners.
This is ideological colonization.
They colonize people with ideas
that try to change mentalities, but
this is not new. This was done by
