Refractory Sector
28 December 2021 (Tuesday) 10:00 PM – 13:00 PM
Venue: Kumardubi Club, Chirkunda (Jharkhand)
Project background
The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector in India is a unique mix of enterprises
using conventional as well as modern technologies. At a national level, relevant information of
MSME sector on various parameters like production, technology employed, types of fuel used and
their consumption, energy saving potential, growth scenarios, etc. are not readily available. This
limits the design of appropriate policy instruments to ensure sustainable growth of MSME sector.
To address this barrier, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, Government of
India, has initiated an ambitious project of mapping the energy intensive MSME sub-sectors across
the country. The BEE has entrusted The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), New Delhi to
undertake the study in the glass & refractory sector.
Glass sector
Glass is an important material in the day-to-day requirements, from laboratory to infrastructure,
glass has secured its position in the world of construction and interior designing. The major factors
driving the growth of glass industries are increasing demand in construction sector e.g. windows,
facades, doors, interior partitions, etc. Further, there is a growing demand for electronic devices
such as solar PV panels, televisions, smartphones, laptops, wearables, etc. which is an additional
factor driving the market growth. The glass products have widespread applications in different end-
use sectors such as the construction, automotive, and furniture industries.
Refractory sector
Refractories are used as a primary material for internal linings in large industrial equipment for their
safe, low-maintenance, and cost-effective operations. A few important and generic products
manufactured in the refractory industry include refractory bricks, bottom pouring (BP) sections,
high temperature alumina bricks, etc. A wide range of products is manufactured in the MSME
sector to cater to the requirements of industries such as steel, cement, glass industries, etc.
Refractories can withstand high temperatures without major transformation in their physical
properties. Refractory products are primarily used in iron & steel, non-metallic, non-ferrous metals
and others.
Objective of workshop
The objective of the National Level Stakeholder Consultation workshop is to take inputs of key
stakeholders on sector level scenarios for energy and resource efficient development of glass and
refractory sector in the country.
