They help to uncover  human rights violations, raise them to the public's
attention, and demand fair and just solutions through their actions. They can also
seek to help individuals and communities recognise and assert their fundamental
rights.
 
Human rights agencies confront serious obstacles in the nations where they work as
a result of their actions. Harassment, incarceration, death threats, and torture
are examples. Restrictive laws have the potential to silence people. Some have
vanished or been murdered. Sexual violence against women human rights defenders is
a possibility.
