PARTE I: Lea el siguiente texto.

GLOBISH

It is a type of “dialect” of English that is used in the 1

international business world to establish a sort of 2
conversation that is at the very least understandable for two 3
people of different nationalities who perhaps are not entirely 4
fluent in English and who wouldn’t receive passing grades on 5
any English test, but who do have the skills necessary to close 6
a deal. 7

This concept was initiated by a former executive of IBM, 8

Jean-Paul Nerrière, when he saw this phenomenon in 9
meetings, conferences, or symposiums with international 10
attendants and decided to create the term “globish”, 11
incorporating “global” and “English”. According to Mr. 12
Nerrière, this English is limited with a vocabulary of 1,500 13
words. 14

In fact, when I did some additional research on the “language”, I was quite surprised to find that there are courses offered to learn 15
it. 16

The concept gives rise to a debate on he positive and negative aspects. Moving beyond the simple discussion of whether or not it 17
is appropriate, it is obvious that knowing even a superficial amount of English is useful and, in a world such as the one we live in 18
today, we tend to apply the law of minimum effort and it is highly probable that this type of “English” increases its presence with 19
the passing of time. 20

What is concerning, obviously, is the potential damage it can cause to English and language in general. Also, it would change the 21
definition of what is necessary in order to be considered “fluent” in a language, with some not able to acheive more than mere 22
“communication” in this limited use. 23

Jean-Paul Nerrière states that the idea is not to compare globish with real English, but to see it as a tool that can be useful in 24
certain circumstances and can somehow make people who are reticent to learn English, those who do not have the resources to do 25
so, or those who never take the chance because they believe it to be too difficult or will take up too much time, can become 26
inspired and start learning the language. 27

It must also be said that the vocabulary of globish is limited to the most common words and constructing sentences that are 28
complex is not possible. This renders this offshoot as truly “poor English” that is, nevertheless, grammatically correct. 29

What is a reality is that it appears apparent that there is an immediate necessity to learn English, even in its most basic form, since
there are always new ideas to simplify how to learn and use it; simple English, basic English (850 words), etc. 31

In short, we will have to let time show us how meetings, conferences, etc. where people from different national and linguistic 33
backgrounds take part are eventually handled.

2) ¿Cómo inicio el concepto de Globish ?

Fue iniciado por un ex ejecutivo de IBM, Jean-Paul Nerrière, cuando vió este fenómeno en reuniones, conferencias y simposios
con asistentes internacionales (líneas 9, 10, 11, 12)

3) ¿Cuál es la posición de Jean-Paul Nerrière con respecto al tópico?

Jean-Paul Nerrière afirma se debe ver como una herramienta que puede ser útil en ciertas circunstancias y que de alguna manera

PARTE III: Elabore una composición donde redacte la idea general del texto. (6 puntos)

El “globish” es un tipo de inglés que se utiliza en el mundo de los negocios con la finalidad de que personas que no hablen fluidamente el
inglés y que sean de distintas nacionalidades puedan comunicarse de forma efectiva. Sin embargo, a pesar de que esta nueva modalidad de
inglés posee un vocabulario relativamente amplio y su estructura gramatical es correcta, es considerado un inglés pobre que a largo plazo
pudiera afectar el uso adecuado del idioma.

Globish is a type of English that is used in the business world so that people who do not speak English fluently and who are of
different nationalities can communicate effectively. However, despite the fact that this new modality of English has a relatively
large vocabulary and its grammatical structure is correct, it is considered poor English that in the long term could affect the
adequate use of the language.
