olf is a game of myths. We’ll examine several of them
within this article, but perhaps the biggest of them all is
that the basics of the golf swing are for beginners only.
Of course, the game’s fundamentals represent the
starting point for anyone new to the game; but even if you
feel you have a sound understanding of the building blocks
of the golf swing, these crucial elements are in need of
constant evaluation and checking. We golfers slip in and out
of good habits all the time, and all too often what we think
we are doing is not what is actually happening. We might
have learned the basics as beginners, but from then on our
mission is to keep on top of them.
And of course, now is the perfect time to do it. With little
or no competitive golf available at the start of the season,
you have the time and space to shake off those old, bad
habits and build your 2022 game on solid foundations.
Going beyond the set-up into the basic movement patterns
every swing needs, this article is designed to help you do
just that. We’ll also clear up four false concepts about the
basics of the swing that may be holding you back.
But remember; basics need constant attention. Keep this
information to hand and return to it regularly through the
season. Believe us: applying regular basics maintenance is
your most efficient route to a season of consistent,
enjoyable golf.
Lead hand
1 Stand upright,
your feet together.
Hold the club out in
front of you in your trail

slightly upwards. Keep your
focus on the leading edge of the
clubface, which you must set to

hand with the leading edge – the
back of the hand will be facing
down your target line.
Trail hand
1 Keep that leading edge upright and
the shaft angled a little upwards.
Stretch your trail hand out and place
its fingers against the shaft as shown,
its palm facing the target.
2 Hinge forward from the hips until the club hits the
ground. Throughout this hinge, keep your back
nicely neutral; we are lowering the club through hip
hinge, not through any bending of the spine. As you
do this, you should feel your legs naturally straighten.
3 Soften the knees. We are not looking for excessive
knee flex or bend, more a feeling of popping them both
forward, out of their sockets. Through this softening you MYTH

will see a lead arm that does indeed

harder you try to create the
straightness, the more problems it
causes during the swing.
Stiff-armed
As soon as you actively set out to keep
that lead arm straight, you will create
tension; your grip will tighten, and so
will the arms. Your wrists get jammed,
you can’t get any flow into your motion
and your swing becomes restricted.
Softer hands
The key element here
is grip pressure.

This can be tricky to see so
placing an alignment stick,

From here we run our body parallel to the

‘To get four balls on the
first green in eight shots
was almost showing off
– but then it got harder’
I first played The Grove just after it opened and
really enjoyed it. Now, having encountered it
fully mature and displaying rough capable of
testing even Bryson DeChambeau’s muscles,
I love it and would think it has to be near the
top of England’s leading parkland layouts.
Be warned, though, you need to pitch up
armed with a variety of shots – combined with
pinpoint accuracy to execute them – if you’re to
get the better of the challenging layout.
To get four balls on the first green in eight
shots was almost showing off, but the other 17
holes proved really tough – apart from the
uphill par-3 16th… our combined score of eight
was unprecedented in my time playing the
game – a feat even the Tour stars would struggle
to achieve. Oddly enough, though, I’m usually
not a big fan of short holes played to hidden
greens and there are a couple at The Grove!
Perhaps strangely, for a 14-handicapper, my
favourite hole was the toughest stroke index –
the wonderful downhill par-4 3rd, with a small
lake short of the green. On the day, going for it
in two was out of the question, but a sensible
pitch and two putts secured a good net par.
Off-course, the front of house service was
impeccable. The 1st tee briefing, just like many
USA courses of similar ilk, was factual and
helpful and in my book you’ll struggle to find a
better resort venue in the country. My only
issue was that I would have liked to have seen
the 3ft high rough trimmed down to aid speed
of play, but overall it was a memorable day out.
