MODULE 5: ELEMENTS OF A
SHORT STORY
VILLEGAS, JEROME FLOYD S.
H. E. 12 -
MS. KRISTIENNE JANE SARTO
SINIGANG

BY: MARIE AUBREY J. VILLACERAN

SETTING :

The main setting is the Home of Liza, where the action

takes place. The focus of some settings here is the kitchen,
because this is where Liza cooks sinigang with her Tita
Loleng. They are preparing, cooking, and communicating in
the kitchen. In addition, the other setting is at the funeral of
her brother (who is also the half-brother of Liza's dad). This
is in Bulacan.
CHARACTER :
Liza - is the protagonist or main character
in the story.
Tita Loleng - she is the only one of the few
people who respected, and understood,
Liza's decision.
Father - Liza's father, who has an
extramarital affair.
Mother- Liza's Mother.
Mother
Sylvia- she is the woman that having affair
Sylvia
with Liza's father.
Lem - stepbrother of Liza. His true parents
are Liza's father and Sylvia.
Meg - Liza's younger sister.
Exposition :
Tita Loleng finally decided to ask Liza
a question about what happened while
Liza was wondering how long her Tita
Loleng could keep her curiosity at bay. Liza
is helping her auntie in the preparation of
Sinigang. Her Tita Loleng, on the other
hand, was wanting for more than just an
extra pair of hands in the kitchen, and
while they're at it, Tita Loleng inquires
about her half-brother's funeral.

PLOT :
RISING ACTION: Looking through an open doorway,
she noticed a few unfamiliar faces having
muttered discussions over the coffee cups
in the next room. She was taken aback
when a woman approached her near the
light and described a woman solely on the
basis of her appearance, and she
observed that she was about her mother's
age. Tita Loleng inquired about the woman
when Liza returned to the kitchen. When
the woman introduced herself as Sylvia,
she returned to her memories and found all
of her questions answered.

PLOT :
RISING ACTION:
Liza ran into Sylvia, her father's
mistress and Lem's mother (Stepbrother)
Sylvia took her hand in hers and knelt in
front of her to confess her sins and beg
forgiveness. Sylvia apologised and
pleaded for forgiveness. Sylvia said,
"Everyone makes mistakes." Liza wanted
Sylvia to let go of her hand, so she really
seems to understand, and Sylvia let go of
her hands but hugged her tightly instead.
Despite her need to get away from Sylvia,
she remained still.

PLOT :
CLIMAX :
She recalls feeling a great deal of
bitterness towards her father. She was
well aware that her father was staring at
her, but she refused to look him in the
eyes. When her father approached and
took a position next to her, she remained
silent. He spoke with his daughter and
expressed his gratitude for Liza's visit. Her
thought was that one of her tita loleng had
inquired if she had cried.

PLOT :
CLIMAX :
They talked about how Lem was a
good child and an acolyte in church, and
that they didn't have to worry about him
because their father, Mario, informed
them that he was going to a better place.
Liza's father dubbed her "sinverguenza,"
or "shameless daughter," in contrast to
herself. Liza eventually turned to face him,
but all she had for him was one question:
"Why?" However, her father averted his
gaze.

PLOT :
FALLING ACTION :
At home, the cooking continues. Liza was
stopped by Tita loleng, who warned her
against further mashing. She'd insert her
own flesh and bone. They were both
preparing meat for sinigang, and Tita
Loleng removed her apron to stretch her
back out a little. Liza heaved a sigh of
relief as Tita loleng patted her head. All of
her questions in her mind had come to a
halt.

PLOT :
RESOLUTION :
She's almost done making Sinigang at this
point. Liza's father was crying and
together with her, and she realized that if
she had died, her father would be crying
as well. Her father apologized profusely
and said sorry that he regretted all of his
mistakes. Liza was then brought to the
table later in the lunch. The lively image
came to her mind when she imagined them
sitting at their normal table, and she sat
next to her father, who was at the head of
the table.

PLOT :
RESOLUTION :
Then, as a family, he would tell
about his day, and his father would
inquire about his family. She had a
dream that her father would
complement her on the way she had
prepared his favorite food, and she
would smile and incorporate that she
never completely showed it because it
was like a fresh beginning for them.

PLOT :
CONFLICT :
The fact that her father is having
an affair with another woman has had the
biggest impact on Liza. Since she used to
be a daddy's girl who was let down by her
father when he made a mistake. Her half-
brother was always the good and
preferred son, she stated. After realizing
that her father had another lady and a
child, Liza's relationship with him had
deteriorated or became polluted. Her trust
in her father was shattered. Man versus
man is the sort of conflict.
THEME :
Allowing our emotions to control
us, like, is not a good option. Like what
Liza did, she had to use all of her self-
control to appear calm, and all she did
was raise an eyebrow. Life is full with
opportunities for people to make
mistakes, and everyone makes mistakes.
The difference is how each of us is
affected by our own mistakes. The
lesson is that everyone needs to believe
in themselves and their partners. To
serve as a reflection of our errors.
POINT OF VIEW :
The point of view is in the
first person. Liza narrates her
story in the first person, telling
how she copes with her father's
affair with another woman and
how it affects her emotionally.
Liza is narrating the story, and
cooking Sinigang reflected her
emotions as she reminisced on
her recollections.
