issues that most don’t know
how to deal with.

resilient later in life and
find it more difficult to work
through problems, which can
prevent them from growing into
healthy and versatile adults.
However, young people have
been constantly working on
ways to cope with and improve
poor mental health.
One of the ways I’ve looked at
is expression, specifically
through music.
Charlie and Michael Interview Is expression, musical or
otherwise, something that you
have found to positively
affect you and why do you
think that?
B roll of Charlie and Michael Music is a top-rated pastime
playing for young people. Music-making
is also very important and
seen as a 'vital part of their
lives'. Research recently done
by Youth Music states that
making music makes young
people feel 'worthwhile and
helps explore their emotions'.
Young people are using music
to help support and improve
their emotional state and
improve their well-being. Over
80% of young people said that
music made them happy and most
said that they would be sad if
they had to go even just a day
without music.

Do you think COVID-19 worsened
or improved your mental health
and how?
Sadly, young people’s mental
health needs are not supported
early enough,
and often young people only
receive support when they have
reached a crisis point.
Two-thirds of young people who
need specialist support
couldn’t access it. Many young
people have been told that
they were not ‘ill enough’ to
receive support and only less
than 1 in 3 young people do
have access to NHS care and
treatment.
These figures are terrifyingly
low, which is why many young
people fight to have their
voices heard and to try and
make a difference and support
each other.

Michael expression to someone
struggling with mental health?
How would you motivate someone
who wants to learn to play and
make music?
What kind of coping strategies
do you have that’s not
musically involved that you
think can help others?
What tips do you have for
someone wanting to start
making music?

some terrible facts and
statistics about the poor or
lack of mental health
treatment that is offered to
struggling youth.
I have been amazed to find
that because of this most
young people have found or are
finding ways to keep their
mental health healthy and
controllable. However, there
are some who desperately need
help but cannot or are not
receiving the support they
need. This is an issue that
needs much more attention,
research and exploration.
