time abroad with giving her a newfound sense of
personal adventure. “I planned solo journeys, met
wonderful new people, and by the time I got back
to campus, I was a changed woman, more eager
than ever to tear into my books and soak up every
drop of life on campus and elsewhere,” says Tara.
She also had a new understanding of what she was
capable of doing—which empowered her to fly
to Ann Arbor, Michigan, before graduating from
Lawrence for an interview with Google, where
she has been working ever since. Even today, Tara
can see the transformative power of study abroad.
“I think of my time in London almost every day,”
she says, adding her hope that future Lawrentians
experience it so they can “reimagine what they’re
capable of.”

Anthony had the opportunity to perform
all over the city while completing in-depth
studies of chamber music and performance.
The defining moment of his study abroad,
Anthony says, was “my last performance of the
semester at Casa Verdi,” the former home of
opera legend, Giuseppe Verdi. “The home is a
massive mansion with a beautiful performance
hall,” Anthony explains, complete with “high
ceilings covered in murals and a gorgeous
piano donated by [Vladimir] Horowitz,” one
of the greatest pianists of all time. Anthony
performed piano trios and solos with a few
other musicians, but the event “was a really
exciting” because “the audience was full of
highly trained musicians.”
Anthony says that his studies abroad changed
him in striking ways: “having the opportunity
to go to so many different places and be
immersed in so many different cultures is
really life-changing and forces you to assess
the way you live.” According to Anthony, living
abroad makes you “think about everything
that you do daily that is so normal here, but
completely different from the way of life in
other countries,” a realization that Anthony
could only experience thanks to the global
education offered at Lawrence.
