Introduction

The Liberty statue was a gift from France to the United States and was placed
in June 1886 as a symbol of friendship of the Declaration of Independence.
(July 4, 1776) declaration of independence. The statue was designed by Gustave
Eiffel and built by the French sculptor Frederic Bartholdi, born in Colmar, whose
mother Marie Bartholdi’s model would have been. It was originally intended to be
a giant lighthouse. The reason I chose my report to do it about the Liberty
Statue is because it appears in a lot of movies, is really beautiful and fascinating
and almost nobody inclusive me doesn’t know what it is all about and why it’s
standing there. That’s why I decided to do some research to gain knowledge
about it and in the same time using it to make a report about it.
It’s history
The Liberty statue is made of plates attached to a frame work that was
designed by, designed by Frédéric Bartholdi and Gustave Eiffel, Bartholdi was
inspired by French law professor and politician Édouard René de Laboulaye. The
crown of the statue which has seven points represents the seven continents and
seas. There is also a replica of eleven and half meters in height in Paris near the
Eiffel Tower. The statue was supposed to arrive in 1885 but it was a copy, that
was because the bronze statue was not finished yet, only till 1889 when the final
and real sculpture arrived which is still standing nowadays. Also in the Jardin du
Luxembourg in Paris there is a small replica of three meters high. There is also a
replica on the Square of Heavenly Peace made by students who made it in
protests in 1989, this means that there are almost a total of ten replica’s around
France and maybe more! From 1984 to 1986 the torch of the statue with 24-
karat gold leave flame is replaced. In 1985 the Statue of Liberty was awarded
as a World Famous Site. In 2003 it was 118 years old and the monument was
restored again, especially for the safety of visitors. The statue of liberty had
been off public for a while due to restorations and since the summer of 2004
the Statue of Liberty was able to be visited again. Afther the attack on New
York in 2001, the statue was open for public again and people could now not only
visit the base but also the crown.
Design, style, and symbolism
Bartholdi considered how to express the idea of American liberty the best.
Earlier in American history two female figures which where a symbol for the
nation, this idea was used for the statue. One female icon in American culture
was a representation of Liberty, derived from Libertas, the goddess of freedom
widely worshipped in the times of ancient Rome, especially among slaves and the
woman liberty icon seemed very popular. Laboulaye a design helper of Bartholdi
had no interest for revolution, that’s why Bartholdi's figure would be dressed in
flowing robes. Instead of the impression of aggressive violence, Bartholdi
wished to give the statue a peaceful appearance and chose a torch, representing
the future and will of fire.

Construction

The statue's head on exhibit at the Paris World's Fair, 1878

On Bartholdi’s return to Paris in 1877, he concentraded on completing the head.
The head was exhibited at the 1878 Paris World’s fair. The fundraising for the
statue continued that was because it costs a lot to make this kind of size of
statue. They made money by asking money to see the statue in progress and
there was also a sale of small silver liberty statue’s to gain money. In the end
they raised almost 250.000 and that was a good amount of money to continue
the build. The head and arm had been built with assistance from Viollet-le-Duc,
who fell ill in 1879. He soon died, leaving no information of how he wanted to
continue on the statue, the following year, Bartholdi was able to obtain the help
of the designer and builder Alexandre-Gustave EiffelEiffel and his structural
engineer, Maurice Koechlin, decided to abandon the pier and instead help the
build of the statue.

Opinion
I think this statue is very interesting, it has a very wide and big history and has
been standing there as a symbol of peace for a very long time. It is of big value
and emotion to the people and is the outcome of very hard workers and time.
Most of the people do not know what the Liberty statue stands for or why it is
there but I think the reason behind it is even greater then the statue itself.
Every piece of it has some emotional, cultural or reason behind it on how it looks
or why it is there. I think that is what makes a statue interesting, also the idea
of going all the way up to the crown and have a vieuw on the world from up there
is really amazing. My conclusion is that it’s one of the most, no maybe the best
artworks in history of the world.
