Electrical Wire Joints and Splices

Laboratory Report

September 15, 2021

I. Objectives:

1. To recognize the effects of mechanical properties of materials in wire splicing.

2. To understand variations in the properties of materials.
3. To perform forming and splicing process using pliers.

II. Introduction

Electrical wirings are not always installed from the power cutout (circuit
breakers) to the power outlets without cut. From time to time, they have to be joined or
spliced together. The fundamental requirement of an effective splice includes making
sure that the wires are mechanically secured (firm and tight) and electrically secured
(clean and free from impurities even without soldering).

III. Analysis

It was hard to execute all the given tasks, however, this will help to the students
studying engineering courses to improve the knowledge towards electrical matters. There
are a lot of accidents causing of short circuit and made to explode, maybe the reasons are
lack of knowledge in terms of electrical wiring, improper execution, malfunction of
specific appliances and other incidents related to electrical matters.
Perhaps, students found out that this kind of activity is difficult especially to those
students who did not encounter electrical subject in their high school. Still, the activity is
interesting and there are a lot of lessons to be learned
At some point, electrical wiring will not function if the stripping and skinning is incorrect
also the splicing process. There are specific splicing process for a specific wiring
installation, for instance, Rat Tail joint, it used when the two conductors are joined
together with the same wire in junction boxes.

IV. Conclusion

Before, the author thought that electrical wiring installation has the same splicing
process even in various ways of joining wires. Like for example in Ordinary Cross Joint,
there are two conductors that are extended away from the branch conductor in opposite
directions and the two conductors gaining energy in the same branch conductor. The
author thought that they have the same splicing process since they had only one branch
conductor to obtain energy, which is wrong. There are still specific processes in specific
installations.

In terms of proper handling of electrical tools, the executor should follow the right
handling of tools because if they didn’t, they would encounter these circumstances;
incorrect splicing, incorrect stripping and skinning, struggle in removing insulator, and
the worst thing is executor might get wounds. Also protect themselves by equipping
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

In other words, always follow the given instructions and procedures to obtain
desired outcome and to prevent injuries and accidents.

V. Recommendation

The author wish for more lessons and updated electrical wiring installation processes.
The author wish for providing safety protocols for this matter.
The author wish for documentation of making a splice attached each steps.
The author wish for implementing dos and don’ts of making splice.
The author wish for proper use of tools and equipment.

VI. Documentation
Materials and tools:
 Electrical Pliers- a hand tool that is used to hold and cut wires.
 Knife- a hand tool used to remove remaining insulators.
 Ruler- a hand tool used to measure the length of a thing.
 Solid Electrical Wire #14
 Acetate
 Card Board
