Lesson 3: Persuasive Speech in Public Institutions

General Learning Objectives:


At the end of this lesson, the students are expected to:
1. appreciate and analyze persuasive speeches made in public
institutions;
2. give a speech as an advocate for or against a public policy, or to
speak up about a public figure, event, or other topic
national/regional in scope; and
3. apply learnings in real-world scenarios.

Content Introduction:

Persuasive speeches in public institutions are important in


government and in our way of life. They affect public policy and establish
laws that citizens should follow and obey. These can also be made to
change existing laws and norms that are problematic. It is also possible to
make persuasive speeches in the public sphere without being part of the
government, or a way of expressing outrage and airing public grievances.

1. What is domestic violence?


Domestic violence is violence or other abuse that occurs in
domestic setting, such as in marriage or cohabitation.

2. Why is it that people do not usually talk about domestic


violence?
People do not usually talk about domestic violence because it
can lead to a negative health outcomes. There are also
behavioral health concerns like depression, alcohol, and
substance abuse and high risk sexual behaviors.

3. Should people talk about domestic violence? Why or Why not?


People should talk about domestic violence and it is more
important because the more we talk about domestic violence
the more likely it becomes that we build awareness, identity
abusive behaviors, and take action to prevent harm to people in
our communities.
4. Do you think the government is doing enough about domestic
violence? Why or Why not?

I think government is doing enough about domestic violence
because they made efforts in protecting welfare of children
against violence actions and behaviors.

5. Who is Patrick Stewart? Why do you think he would care about


domestic violence?
Patrick Stewart is an English Actor who has a career spanning
six decades in various stage productions, television, film and
video games.

up in a home darkened by domestic violence, his father was an
angry and unhappy man who was not able to control his
emotions, or his hands, I witnessed violence against my mother
and felt powerless to stop it.
