INTRODUCTION
Every individual desires to live a long, healthy, and happy life. Based clinical and experimental
data undertaken in progressive countries, many people today know how to get and stay in shape.
Physical fitness tests determine strengths and weaknesses are available. This knowledge, however, is
not always applied in one’s daily life as there are people worldwide who take physical activities for
granted and ignore the very elements that contribute to well-being. A careful study of the physical fitness
tests prescribed in schools and their application can lead to a healthy lifestyle.

CONTENT DISCUSSION & EXERCISES

Physical Fitness
Your physical fitness level will help determine the quality of your performance. You may be an
ordinary person, an athlete, or a dancer.

To achieve a physically fit body, discipline is essential. Regular participation in in vigorous

workouts can do wonders in developing and maintaining a body fit to work, enjoy recreational pursuits,
and meet life’s challenges.

Although exposure to a variety of physical activities is the utmost concern of the physical
education, it is the responsibility of the student who desires ultimate fitness to practice good habits as
well.

Oyco, V. (2007), Physical Fitness for College Freshmen

Activity

Discuss briefly but sufficiently:

What is PHYSICAL FITNESS?

Physical fitness refers to the ability of your body systems to work together efficiently to allow
you to be healthy and perform activities of daily living. Being efficient means doing daily
activities with the least effort possible. A fit person is able to perform schoolwork, meet home
responsibilities, and still have enough energy to enjoy sport and other leisure activities. A fit
person can respond effectively to normal life situations, such as raking leaves at home, stocking
shelves at a part-time job, and marching in the band at school. A fit person can also respond to
emergency situations - for example, by running to get help or aiding a friend in distress.
Why is PHYSICAL FITNESS important?

Regular exercise and physical activity promotes strong muscles and bones. It improves
respiratory, cardiovascular health, and overall health. Staying active can also help you maintain
a healthy weight, reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and reduce your risk for
some cancers.

Analysis

Outline the eight (8) components of physical fitness and describe each. Use a graphic organizer of your
preference.

 Cardiovascular Endurance
 Local Muscle Endurance
 Strength
 Strength – Endurance
 Power
 Flexibility
 Balance
 Agility
Application

Perform various physical activities. Photograph yourself as you demonstrate how to improve
each component and post it on the google classroom. Write in the comment section the physical fitness
component.

(Requirement: Please wear complete and proper PE uniform)

Lesson 4 Physical Fitness Tests

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this lesson the students must

be able to:

Study the revised physical fitness test manual and practice at home while observing
appropriate facilities, instructions, and scoring.
Read and identify the health-related and skill-related fitness tests.
Execute the physical fitness tests and use the PFT card to record scores honestly.

INTRODUCTION
How physically fit are you? Every Filipino college student should know his physical fitness status
so that he can determine his strengths and weaknesses. If the abdominal muscles are weak, then select
activities to improve these muscles. As the student gets exposed to a variety of exercises, he can identify
which activities may prove beneficial to him in the pursuit of physical fitness.

The Physical Fitness Test Manual
A review of the existing physical fitness tests for the purpose of establishing testing protocols
considering to be more current and appropriate for the Special Program in Sports (SPS) and in the new K
to 12 program, conducted through a workshop initiated by the Task Force on School Sports (TFSS), and
subsequently, by the Bureau of Secondary Education (BSE), gave rise to this Physical Fitness Test
Manual. It is intended to be used in the public and private schools which intend to adopt the program.

Passing the prescribed standards is a requirement for admission into the SPS. Moreover, under
the K-12 Basic Education Curriculum, Physical Fitness is one of the major goals of the Physical Education
Program and shall be incorporated/ adopted in the PE Curriculum.

instructions, and scoring. http://bit.ly/PFT-manual

Analysis

Read and identify the health-related and skill-related fitness tests. Record them below and identify the
purpose of each test.

Part 1: Health-Related Fitness Test

A. BODY COMPOSITION
1. Body composition is used to describe the percentages of fat, bone and muscle in
human bodies. Purpose: To find what percentage of your body weight is fat.
B. CARDIOVASCULAR ENDURANCE
1. Cardiovascular endurance is a measure of how well you can do exercises that
involve your whole body at moderate to high intensity for an extended time. Purpose:
tests monitor how well the heart, lungs, and muscles perform during moderate to
high-intensity exercise. ______________________ Purpose:
____________________________________________
C. STRENGTH
1. The extent to which muscles can exert force by contracting against resistance.
Purpose: Can help you manage or lose weight, and it can increase your metabolism
to help you burn more calories. ______________________ Purpose:
____________________________________________

D. FLEXIBILITY
1. The ability of a joint or series of joints to move through an unrestricted, pain free
range of motion. Purpose: ____________________________________________
2. ______________________ Purpose: Helps eliminate awkward and inefficient
movement by allowing joints to move freely through a full normal ROM, and it may
also provide increased resistance to muscle injury (3, 22, 23, 24, 32, 36).
Part 2: Skill-Related Fitness Test

A. COORDINATION
1. The ability to execute smooth, accurate, controlled motor responses (optimal
interaction of muscle function). Coordination is the ability to select the right muscle at
the right time with proper intensity to achieve proper action. Purpose: To execute
smooth, accurate, controlled motor responses.
B. AGILITY
1. Is defined as “a skill-related component of physical fitness that relates to the ability to
rapidly change the position of the entire body in space with speed and accuracy.”
Purpose: Helps the body to maintain proper alignment and posture during movement.
C. SPEED
1. The ability to move all or part of the body as quickly as possible. Purpose:  Training
puts your muscles through a fuller range of motion, improving flexibility.
D. POWER
1. (measured in Watts) is the ability to exert force in the shortest period of time. The
physical formula of power is Power = Force multiplied by velocity or Power = Work /
time. Purpose:  In this sense is the ability to transform physical energy into force at a fast
rate, with emphasis placed on the speed of the action. Such actions require high yield,
short duration energy production that is reliant on anaerobic energy systems and fast-
twitch muscle fibres.
E. BALANCE
1.  Is a term used to describe the ability to maintain an upright position.  Purpose:
the ability to control your body's position, whether stationary (i.e. a complex yoga
pose) or while moving (e.g. skiing).
F. REACTION TIME
1. Is the time needed to respond consciously to an external stimulus. Purpose:
Reaction time is one of the important methods to study a person's central
information processing speed and coordinated peripheral movement
response. Visual choice reaction time is a type of reaction time and is very important
for drivers, pilots, security guards, and so forth.
