Communication Ethics

is how a person uses language, media, journalism, and creates

relationships that are guided by an individual's moral and values. These ethics consider being aware
of the consequences of behavior and consequences; it's to “respect other points of view and tolerate
disagreement[1]”. Principles of ethics include being honest, being fair, as well as integrity of one's own
words.
Ethical communication is crucial due to its emphasis on the responsibility of people to keep society
civil. With the concern of fake news becoming more prevalent in today's society, the importance with
ethical communication has been significant.

Ten Basics of Communication Ethics

1. Seek to “elicit the best” in communications and interactions with other group members.
2. Listen when others speak.
3. Speak non-judgmentally.
4. Speak from your own experience and perspective, expressing your own thoughts, needs,
and feelings.
5. Seek to understand others.
6. Avoid speaking for others, for example by characterizing what others have said without
checking your understanding, or by universalizing your opinions, beliefs, values, and
conclusions, assuming everyone shares them.
7. Manage your own personal boundaries: share only what you are comfortable sharing.
8. Respect the personal boundaries of others.
9. Avoid interrupting and side conversations.
10. Make sure that everyone has time to speak, that all members have relatively equal “air time”
if they want it.

What are the problems that can arise when people are unethical?

1. The country can become divided, filled with misinformation and hate, possibly
leading to violent conflict. People will protest with their own kind to try and gain
favor of those in power and we get to hear about it on the internet, TV or the radio.
2. The failure of communication to the extent of isolation, brought about by the
apparent lack of integrity in the individual exhibiting that unethical behaviour.
