The pie chart illustrates the main causes of land degradation worldwide and by region.

It shows the
period of 1990s. The table shows… this by region.
In the period of 1990

The first picture graph gives us a specific information about the problems that have led to land
degradation. There are three highlighted causes which include over-grazing, deforestation and over-
cultivation, others are not named. The second picture is more narrowed specific as it is a table with
several regions, such as North America, Europe and Oceania.

Looking at the pie chart we can see that it can be seen that the main cause of land degradation is
over-grazing. It has was 35% which is the highest one among all the others. The second biggest
problem is deforestation with 30%. Over-cultivation is not far from itthis, lagging behind by 2%.
Other causes make up the remaining 7%. Over-grazing is clearly visible in Oceania where it is 11.3%
of total land degraded. Europe is the next victim of over-grazing with 5.5%, however it is considered
the least problematic sphere factor there. And North America only has issues with overgrazing at got
only 1.5% of it. Speaking of North America, their total percentage of land degradation is lower than
of others, but its main cause is over-cultivation which is 3.3% and the smallest one reason is
deforestation. Meanwhile in Europe deforestation makes the highest percentage of all problems soil
damage with 9.8%.
Overall Europe is on at the top of most land damagedland-damaged regions. It has totals 23%,
which is the highest numberamount. Oceania is on the at second place with 13% of land degraded,
however with no over-cultivation at all. North America has almost no deforestation there, but
altogether its total percentage goes to 5.

Has 35% = was/is

Factor = cause

Lower than others / lower than that of others

Land degradation = land damage / soil damage / unusable land

Amount / proportion (for%)

In the first place = at the first instance / to begin with

In first place = to win/to be on top

In second place

Comparing – talk also about similarities

‘select/ report / compare/’

TA: 6 – be more selective, and also in comparing discuss similarities more

CC: - 6 errors with ‘it’ rather than this

LR: 6.5 – vary your language a bit more in paraphrasing – refer to what the proportion is – land dame
/ damaged soil. Comprises / is / makes up 35%

GRA: 6.5 – be careful with articles, (plurals)
