Porcela Mejia
Allow us to introduce you to Doña Porcela Mejia Piner. Doña Porcela is a 59-
year-old single mother, who takes care of Zacharias, her 30-year old son with
Down Syndrome. Before the hurricanes, she used to raise pigs and chickens and
resell fish in Bilwi. However, due to the hurricanes, she lost her animals and
house and has lived in a make-shift tent for the past 10 months with Zacharias.
Doña Porcela told us the worst part about living in the tent was that the crabs
were unbearable. They left bites all over their bodies.
After receiving her new home, Doña Porcela said, “Thank you Metanoia (World
Challenge) for my beautiful home. I now feel safe and secure again. It’s like a
dream that has come true! I pray that the Lord will give you many more
blessings, so that you can help other families here in our community.”
Note: During the construction of the house, Zacharias was our biggest help.
Every day, rain or shine, he carried tools and materials, and most importantly,
was dancing and singing in Miskito, making the construction that much more
enjoyable.
