Pair Work

From the various civilizations discussed in this lesson, choose three which you think
have the most significant art contribution to the world. Justify your answer for each chosen
civilization. (10 points per civilization)

Content = 5 Organization = 3 Mechanics = 2

Each civilizations of the past from different corners of the Earth offered promising
contributions in the field of Art. Cave paintings, Egyptian Art, Greek Art, Roman Art,
Chinese Art and Japanese Art have contributed a lot that even their traces and influences to
the recent forms of art are still visible. However, if I were to chooses 3 from among the
aforementioned civilizations that significantly contributed to art, they would be Greek Art,
Roman Art and Japanese Art.

Greek Art.
The idea of Greek gods and goddesses paved way not only in the field of literature,
entertainment and also in sculptures or statue.
Literature wise; in English subjects which tackles the Iliad and the Odyssey by the
Greek Poet Homer, the story of Greek gods and goddesses are discussed in terms of their
origin, power and the wars ignited because of jealousy, greed and simply wrath and their
mishaps. Examples are Orpheus, Cupid and Psyche, Icarus and Daedalus, Medusa and many
more. There are even books made by authors such as Rick Riordan who is an American
author known for writing Percy Jackson and the Olympian Series and other authors; that are
available in spin-offs, sequels and even different versions which seems to pique the interest
of many until today.
Since the books inspired of it became mainstream, in the field of entertainment; I have
seen movies inspired and adapted from the Greek gods and goddesses such as Helena, , Troy,
Wrath and Clash of the Titans, Hercules, Percy Jackson, Wonder Woman and many others,
be it in cartoon animation or portrayed by famous actors and actresses of Hollywood.
Another thing, in sculptures wise, Greek sculptors like Phidias and Polykleitos (5 th
century) and Praxiteles, Skopas and Lysippos (4 th century) had figured out how to apply the
rules of anatomy and perspective to the human form. Earlier statues of people had looked
awkward and fake, but by the classical period they looked natural, almost at ease. They even
had realistic-looking facial expressions. Which as of now, the idea of making a monument or
a statue in memory of a person who died is a practice especially when a person is of high
rank, significant example to look up to and sculptures of Saints and Angels in Churches.

Roman Art.
As the poet Edgar Allan Poe in his poem To Helen says, “the glory that was Greece
and the grandeur that was Rome,”. Romans strived to build their own identity in arts.
Although the practical uses of art were distinctly Roman, the art forms themselves were
influenced by the ancient Greeks and Etruscans.
The Romans wanted their art and architecture to be useful hence the infamous
Colesseum, an amphitheater which was used as a venue of both entertainment and
celebration. Their perseverance in building and architecture paved way to the recent standard
of structures. Architecture is one of the most sought courses since as time passes, artistic and
practical minds are needed in fusion to make promising infrastructures such as the malls,
houses, landmarks, etc. Some examples are the skyscraper Burj Khalifa in Dubai and Marina
Bay Sands Singapore which was featured in many movies.
Coliseums are now present in most large places since people as of today are very
much into festivities that they needed a place to gather and celebrate. The Araneta Coliseum
where concerts and big events are held. It is humongous since it has a capacity of 16, 000 and
Philippine Arena with 55,000 seating capacity. Other countries such as Singapore with its
Indoor Stadium that has a capacity of 12,000, United Center with 23, 500, etc.
Furthermore, Romans also exhibited their skills in portrait with a degree of realism
unknown to Greeks which shows all the physical traits of the subject that makes it look
different from another. In other words, Romans were inclined in showing the finer and the
imperfect details of art as that of its original form. Fernando Amorsolo, painter of rural
Philippines landscapes was regarded as the Father of Philippine Realism for his numerous
realistic paintings. Along with him are Jose Joya, Pacita Abad, Benedicto Cabrera, etc.

Japanese Art.
In today’s time Japan is mainstream for anime and manga. People of different ages
have developed a liking and attachment in this form of entertainment. It’s maybe because of
how the characters are skillfully drawn and made with incredible plots. An evidence that even
before, Japanese were creative and imaginative in their own way. The idea of calligraphy,
woodblock print and publishing and ceramics tradition to name a few.
There were long narrative scrolls that contained both text and paintings. Sections of
text, written in calligraphy (beautiful writing), were alternated with pictures illustrating a
story. In today’s time, Calligraphy is one of the most sought form of writing artists strive to
learn and apply to make their artworks aesthetically pleasing. Some artists are receiving
commissions through this and others use it for work-for-a-cause campaigns.
In terms of printing and publishing, Ukiyo-e is genre of Japanese art most frequently
associated with color woodblock prints which flourished from the 17 th to the 19th centuries.
“Uki” for sadness and “yo” for life. Ukiyo-e quartet: The team involved in the production of
ukiyo-e. It is composed of the publisher (who usually had overall control of the process), the
designer, the block cutter and the printer. In the recent, printing is evident anywhere and it
doesn’t require a lot of manpower. It can be seen on papers, tarpaulins, clothing, in stickers
and even in 3D where the subject is being designed in a certain software through a computer
and being printed using the 3D printer for it to be an object.

In ceramics traditions, Japan has one of the oldest ceramic traditions in the world.
Earthenware vessels called Jomon or “cord-marked” are believed to have been made as early
as 10,000 B.C. As of now some ceramics are considered decorations especially antique ones,
rarely are those who use ceramics as kitchenware.
