DISCUSSION
When artists wish to create copies of an artwork, they make prints.
A print is a work of art made up of ink on paper and existing in multiple examples. It is created not by
drawing directly on paper, but through an indirect transfer process. A good print design uses repetition
of shapes or lines or emphasis through contrast of shapes and lines.
Principles of design
Repetition refers to one object or shape repeated.
Pattern is a combination of elements or shapes repeated in a recurring and regular arrangement.
Rhythm is a combination of repeating elements with variations.
Emphasis is used when the artist wants to highlight an area of the art composition and draw the viewer’s
attention or focus to a specific location in the art/work.

Printmaking is the process by which different types of prints are created. It can make multiple images
or pictures using one tool or several copies from one design.
Printmaking is a means of printing an artwork. This is done by creating the design on a surface
called plate or medium like woodblock, metal plate, stone, or screen.

One of the most interesting printmaking activities is nature printing or recreating images from
nature. Images of natural objects can be transferred onto paper, fabric, and other surfaces to create
captivating works of art. This is done by applying ink or paint to a natural object like rock, fruit,
vegetable, leaf, or petal of a flower.
There are Three Basic Steps in Printmaking
1. Prepare or create a plate.
2. Place the ink in the plate with the desired color.
3. The image is transferred to a material such as paper, cloth, and cardboard.

Lesson 2: Stencil Printmaking

Stenciling is one of the simplest methods of creating a duplicate or copy of an image. It is the process of
printmaking using a stencil.
Stencil a design that is cut out of paper or any other suitable thin or strong material.
Stencils are devices which can be used to trace an object or a letter that has already been cutout.
Stencil art lets people see messages clearly. Alphabet and logo stencil artworks that give
instructions concerning outdoor hazards attract attention easily. Stenciling may be done on walls or
floors. Stenciling can also be done on a material that can be posted indoors or outdoors such as
cardboard, manila paper, or recycled cartons.
