Appendix I-9 Daylighting Factor Calculator - Instructions

This section describes proper use of the tool provided for conceptual level and schematic design level
calculations. The spreadsheet tool uses fundamental algorithms and has been bench tested against
RADIANCE, the most accurate computer simulation tool for lighting and daylighting available[2]. The
current tool allows up to windows (3 vision and 3 clerestorey only on one wall of a room.

Note: Users running Microsoft Excel 2007 or later must enable macros for the proper working of the
daylighting tool. Click the 'Options' button on the main ribbon bar and select 'enable this content'.

The tool uses a standard CIE overcast sky to calculate the Daylight Factors[3] (DF) and can therefore be
used for any regular orthogonal space in any location. However, the Report makes specific use of sky data
pertaining to Minnesota.
Defaults
1.        Overcast Sky
3.       A Minimum 1.0% DF is required in 75% of the Grid
4.        The grid automatically adjusts to provide a granularity of 20 X 20 points in any room.
5.        The limiting uniformity ratio at the work plane 10:1
Inputs
1 Room Width[4]
2 Room Depth[5]
3 Ceiling Height
4 Number of Windows (distributed horizontally in the wall, max of 3)
5 Width of each window
6 Sill height of the vision windows
7 Head height of the vision windows
8 Sill height of the Clerestory windows if any[1]
9 Head height of the Clerestory windows if any[2]
10 Ceiling Reflectance (typically between 75 -95 % for white ceilings)
11 Wall Reflectance[3]
12 Floor Reflectance (typically between 20 -40 % for carpets)
13 Glass Visible Transmittance (VT)
How to use
Begin on the "tool" sheet tab. You can compare 2 alternatives side by side. Enter information only in the
yellow cells at the top. Press the “calculate" button each time you wish to see the results of a scenario.
The calculate button calculates both alternatives at once. Summary results are shown in red text at the
top. To see grid points with similar daylight factor values, press the “Do Isocontours” button AFTER the
calculations have been performed. Press “Color for LEED” button to show colors for Minimum Daylight
Factor and recommended Uniformity Ratio.
A report of inputs and results is provided on the Report sheet tab. Fill in the yellow cells at the top of the
sheet tab and print for your record.

You may enter the results for each room or space type in the table on sheet tab ‘Summary Form’ to
calculate the overall percentage of occupied spaces that meet the minimum daylight factor.

Outputs
1.      DF on a 20X20 grid with coloring of cells by DF achieved
2.      Minimum & maximum DF achieved
3.      % area that achieves minimum DF
4.      % area that exceeds the maximum uniformity ratio
5.      Average Task Illuminance achieved by daylight over an entire overcast day in each month
6.      % of Design Ambient Illuminance achieved by daylight over an entire overcast day in each month

Factors not included in this version that also affect daylighting

1.      Partition heights and furniture, and their reflectances
2.      Shading devices and light shelves
