Distinguish between under reinforced and over reinforced sections in RCC beams [ 5 marks]
What is the advantage and disadvantages of providing large cover to reinforcement in flexural
members?[5 marks]
In order to protect the reinforcement from this phenomenon called corrosion and to provide fire
resistance to bars embedded in concrete, nominal cover is provided for Reinforced Concrete
Structures. Based on the exposure conditions and fire durability requirement IS code suggest the
minimum nominal cover in Table 16.
The minimum values of clear cover are 50mm for Foundation, 40mm for Column, 25mm for Beam,
25mm for shear wall, 15mm for Slab and Stair.
Large cover depths (50–75 mm) are required to protect reinforcement against corrosion in
aggressive environments, but thick cover leads to increased crack widths in reinforced concrete
flexural members.
Large crack-widths (greater than 0.3 mm) permit ingress of moisture and chemical attack to the
concrete, resulting in possible corrosion of reinforcement and deterioration of concrete.
Therefore, thick covers defeat the very purpose for which it is provided. There is a need for judicious
balance of cover depth and crack width requirements.
