Becoming a lawyer in U.S.

and Romania

The specific requirements for becoming a lawyer in the United States vary depending on the state or
territory. However, the basics are the same throughout the country. Generally, one needs to graduate from
law school and pass a state bar exam to be licensed in law in the United States. While it can be a lucrative
field, it requires at least 7 years of schooling after high school and a great deal of work.
To be eligible to apply to law school, one must have a bachelor's degree from a 4-year college or
university. Law schools accept students from any department or major. The Law School Admissions Test
(LSAT) is a half-day standardized test. All law schools accredited by the American Bar Association
(ABA) have this test as an admissions requirement.
Each state has its own bar admissions process. The bar application is a hefty, detailed document. In most
states, the initial application is 15 or 20 pages long and covers specific details over the last 10 years of
ones life. Bar applications also require fingerprints for criminal background checks, which can take
several weeks to complete
It's possible to pass the bar without taking any preparation programs or courses. However, bar passage
rates are significantly higher among students who take prep courses. The cost of a bar study program
pales in comparison to the stress and financial burden of having to take the bar exam twice.
Most states require some sitting down with a member of the local bar, who will ask questions about ones
legal interests and why practice law. While this may feel like a job interview, they typically aren't looking
to hire you. Rather, they're trying to determine if you have the discipline and character necessary to serve
as a member of the bar.
The bar exam is an 18-day multiple choice and essay test that typically takes place over 2 or 3 days. After
the bar exam, one will have to wait several months to find out if passed.
The final step, is of course, the oath in court- to be sworn in as a member of the bar.
In Romania things are a little different. After finishing high school and passing the baccalaureate exam,
one can enroll in law school. The faculty has a duration of 4 years. No prior degrees or training is
required, compared to the United States.
In order to become a lawyer, it is necessary to enter the bar, like in U.S. the person must take a test.
These competitions contain different tests depending on the criteria that are considered necessary to be
met. For example, starting with 2014, there was a change in the organization of admission to the bar in
the sense that currently the examination is based on the grid. Only, in Romania, the person must take the
bar once, for becoming an intern lawyer, and a second exam, after some time, for definitive title.
As an intern, one must be under the guidance of a permanent lawyer, from whom will accumulate all the
information necessary for the exercise of the profession.
