Emily in Paris Fashion Analysis Final
Emily in Paris Fashion Analysis Final
EMILY IN PARIS
BACKGROUND
FACTS
Emily works in a fashion
marketing firm so she needs
to maintain a good style.
Emily's outfits—clearly
intended to contrast with her
French counterparts—are a
riot of colour, patterns and
designer pieces all competing
for attention.
Emily is portrayed as a bold,
unique, and lively woman.
Patricia Field
pink
The type of fashion that they both and grey
Both Carrie and Emily wear a lot of color blocking in order to represent
boldness (they are not afraid to stand out which match their own personality)
Carrie Bradshaw's iconic tutu is also similar to Emily Cooper's tutu.
The only difference is that they swapped colors between the tank-top
and the tutu. Emily's top is white and her skirt is pink, while Carrie's
top is pink and her tutu is white. Consequently, Emily's tutu is a slightly
updated version and not as dram atic as the old version which is
Carrie's tutu.
Although the tulle gowns that they wear have the same model, it gives a
different feel probably because of the different color. The similarities in the
gowns represent a parallel between both women, as both are trying to
create a life for themselves - one by leaving Paris (Carrie), and one by
making Paris her home (Emily).
The color green in Carrie's gown symbolise an emotionally positive color,
green is also the color of growth, the color of spring, of renewal and rebirth
which indicate that Carrie is about to leave Paris and face New York to start
over and show that she is ready for it because she has been there so she can
adapt easily, Meanwhile, Emily's black gown indicate that she needs to show
strength and elegance in order to be welcomed in the new environment.

In this specific pink outfit, Emily use knee high socks to keep up with the
trends. The origin of knee high socks date back to ancient roman times. At
that time, boots haven't been invented, so knee high socks were used as
protection to stay warm in winter. Since the film "clueless", knee high socks
became one of the fashion trend because people began to embrace the
notion of style over pure function.
AUDREY HEPBURN
INSPIRED OUTFIT
Emily wear a black dress to portray the same elegance as Audrey Hepburn's
Breakfast at Tiffany's outfit. In order to look more serious and showing
that she has the strength, Emily wear pieces that are different from what she
would usually wear. She wants to show that people can't look down to her
just because she is American. The color black represent power, strength,
authority, elegance, formality, authority, rebellion, and sophistication.
"She also has that same positive, innocent attitude. The outfit Emily wears to
the opera in Episode 6 is channeling Audrey in Funny Face. It all came
together so naturally, and when I saw Lily in that costume I was like, 'Audrey
Hepburn is here.'" Patricia Field said in a statement from Netflix.
On the trip to Camille’s vineyard, Emily dress up in a casual look that expresses
her cuter and also brighter sides. It also symbolises her bright personality in a
more childish-like appearance. The color yellow in this outfit stands out
independently. Yellow is the most luminous of all the colors of the spectrum. It's
the color that captures our attention more than any other color. It's the color of
happiness, and optimism, of enlightenment and creativity, sunshine and
spring.
Conclusion
Patricia Field, the stylist behind "Emily in Paris" chose outfits based on a
character's personality. The outifit itself can show several meanings behind it, for
example channeling other person to the character. As we can see from the
similarities of Sex and The City and Emilt In Paris, Patricia Field has her own
uniqueness that we can always indicate that the work belongs to her.
