CONDITIONALS (grammar carries meaning!)

-> Time reference!


-> Likelihood!
-> Anything can happen if it’s not past (= everything that happened cannot be changed, and
is now “impossible”)
-> Both clauses (części składowe) of a conditional sentence live their own lives!!! So they can
have separate time reference

0 - “zero” conditional -> universal truth, obvious, general, always etc.


If you work hard, you get promoted
If you drink a lot, you feel sick

1 -> future/present, quite likely and possible to happen


If you work hard, you will get promoted
If you drink a lot, you will feel sick.

2 -> future/present, less likely (still possible)


If you worked hard, you would get promoted
If you drank a lot, you’d feel sick

3 -> past!/impossible to happen/change


If you had worked hard, you would have got promoted
If you hadn’t been drinking a lot, you wouldn’t have felt sick (-> at yesterday’s party,
“then”)

If you worked hard, you would have got promoted (-> combination of present and past
situation)
If you drank less you wouldn’t have been fired.

If you had worked hard, you would get promoted. (-> combination of past and present)
If you had drunk less, you wouldn’t feel so bad now
 The Zero Conditional:
(if + present simple, ... present simple)
If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.

 The First Conditional:


(if + present simple, ... will + infinitive)
If it rains tomorrow, we'll go to the cinema.

 The Second Conditional:


(if + past simple, ... would + infinitive)
If I had a lot of money, I would travel around the world.

 The Third Conditional


(if + past perfect, ... would + have + past participle)
If I had gone to bed early, I would have caught the train.
