Module 7: Lesson 2 Assignment
Module 7: Lesson 2 Assignment
Read all parts of your assignment carefully, and record your answers in the appropriate
places. If you have difficulty with an assignment, go back to the textbook and review the
appropriate lesson. Be sure to proofread your answers carefully before submitting your
Assignment Booklet.
1. Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction between Na2SO4(aq) and
CaCl2(aq).
(2 marks)
Answer:
Na2SO4(aq) + CaCl2(aq) CaSO4(s) + 2NaCl(aq
3. Write a balanced equation for the reaction used to test the filtrate.
(1 mark) Answer:
Na2SO4 (aq) + Ba(NO3)2 (aq) 2NaNO3 (aq) + BaSO4 (s
Hypothesis
(3 marks) 4. Describe what you expect to occur when the products for the four trials are tested.
Make reference to your understanding of equilibrium systems using appropriate terms
and conventions.
Answer:
A white precipitate/cloudiness would be seen. The Ba(NO3)2 solution is
reacting with Na2SO4(aq) to form insoluble BaSO4(s)
Analysis
5. Explain why the mass of precipitate did not differ in the second, third, and fourth trials.

Chemistry 30: Module 7: Lesson 2 2 Assignment Booklet
It did not differ because the mass of the precipitate stayed constant in trials 2,
3 and 4. The reason for this is the excess of CaCl2(aq) had been used. The
maximum amount of insoluble CaSO4(s) has been produced
(1 mark) 7. How do the observations from this investigation support the concept of an equilibrium
system having a forward and a reverse reaction?
Answer:
The exess CaCl2(aq) was used up and the Na2SO4 would all be used in the forward
reaction. Precipitate formation when mixing with Ba(NO3)2(aq) proves that there is a
reverse reaction.
