Adaptive Damper System Description - Components

Damper Unit

The adaptive damper passes the electric current that has been adjusted by the adaptive damper control unit, to the coil to operate the
valves. The solenoid valves open depending on the amount of electric current. Since the amount of oil changes depending on the
driving condition, an optimal damping force can be generated.

Adaptive Damper System Description

Overview

The adaptive damper system provides optimal damping force for all driving conditions by adjusting the damping force of each damper
independently, improving the driving performance.
The system is controlled by the adaptive damper control unit.
With the adaptive damper system, roll-, pitch-, and yaw- motion of the vehicle can be controlled resulting in different driving
characteristics.
The adaptive damper control unit controls each damper solenoid with vehicle motion signals from other control units.

Integrated Drive-Mode System
The adaptive damper system has three control modes which correspond to the integrated drive-mode signal sent from the PCM via
F-CAN. The ride control of the adaptive damper system by the Integrated drive-mode is shown below.

Fail Safe Mode
Depending on the severity of the error, the adaptive damper system will switch to one of four possible fail safe modes. In case of each
fail safe mode a DTC is stored in the adaptive damper control unit.

Fail Safe Failure State Action Failure

Mode Indication
A Power source (IG) failure The current for all dampers is ON
switched off.
Control unit failure
Damper unit failure
B SVCC voltage upper limit failure A fixed current (0.4 A) is set for all ON
dampers.
Vertical acceleration sensor failure

C Power source (+B) failure A fixed current (0.4 A) is set for all OFF
dampers.
CAN communication failure (except driving mode

How to Troubleshoot the Adaptive Damper System 9429 http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/sm/1/2/Contents/enu/61TBAD/...

How to Troubleshoot the Adaptive Damper System

Adaptive Damper System Warning

If an electrical problem with adaptive damper system is detected, adaptive damper system
warning is displayed on the multi-Information display (MID).
In case of adaptive damper control unit is not connected or broken, adaptive damper system
warning is displayed on the MID, but no DTC is stored in other ECUs.
In case of adaptive damper control unit is connected and has detected a problem, adaptive
damper system warning is displayed on the MID, and a DTC is stored in adaptive damper
control unit.

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

The memory can hold 10 DTCs. However, when the same DTC is detected more than once,
the more recent DTC is written over the earlier one. Therefore, when the same problem is

cardiagn.com
detected repeatedly, it is memorized as a single DTC.
The DTCs are memorized in an EEPROM in the adaptive damper control unit. Therefore, the
memorized DTCs cannot be erased by disconnecting the 12 volt battery. Do the specified
procedures to clear the DTCs.
Fail safe mode
Depending on the severity of the error, the adaptive damper system will switch to fail safe mode.
The details of fail safe mode, refer to Adaptive Damper System Description.
How to Troubleshoot DTCs
The troubleshooting procedures assume that the cause of the problem is still present and the
adaptive damper system warning on the MID is displayed. Following the procedure when the
adaptive damper system warning on the MID does not display on can result in incorrect
diagnosis.

1. Question the customer about the conditions when the problem occurred, and try to reproduce
the same conditions for troubleshooting. Find out when the displayed, such as while turning,
after turning, when the vehicle was at a certain speed, etc.

2. When the daptive damper system warning does not display on the MID during the test-drive,
but troubleshooting is done based on the DTC, check for loose connectors, poor terminal
contact, etc., in the affected circuit before you start troubleshooting.

3. After troubleshooting, clear the DTC and test-drive the vehicle. Be sure the adaptive damper
system warning does not display on the MID.
Intermittent Failures
The term "intermittent failure" means a system may have had a failure, but it checks OK now. If
you cannot reproduce the condition, check for loose connections and terminals. Also check
ground and power connections related to the circuit that you are troubleshooting.
How to Retrieve DTCs
1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC).

2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

3. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the adaptive damper control unit. If it

4. Follow the prompts on the HDS to display the DTC(s) on the screen. After determining the
DTC, refer to the DTC troubleshooting. Do the all systems DTC check, and troubleshoot any
powertrain DTCs first.

5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

NOTE:
Freeze data indicates the adaptive damper system conditions when the first system
malfunction that activated the indicator was detected.
The HDS can read the DTC, the freeze data, the current data, and other system data.
For specific operations, refer to the Help menu that came with the HDS.
How to Clear DTCs
1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC).

2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

3. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the adaptive damper control unit. If it
does not, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.

4. Clear the DTC(s) by following the screen prompts on the HDS.

5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
