What I Need to Know

There you are, learner! This is your module for English Quarter 2, Module 5.
There are different fun activities that we will work on together so that at the end of the
module, you will be able to use adjectives, degrees of comparison, and order of adjectives
in sentences.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. Know what adjectives are;
2. Use the degree of comparison of adjectives; and
3. Use in sentences adjectives in a series (order of adjectives).

Let’s get started!

What I Know

Directions: Identify the adjective/s in each sentence below. Write your answer in your
notebook.
1. Maria wears her blue face mask every day.
2. She told her sister not to forget to disinfect her shiny face shield.
3. They exercise regularly for them to be fit and healthy.
4. Their mother told them, “You must keep your distance at least one meter from
the person next to you in order to get rid of COVID-19.”
5. Always bring your own isopropyl alcohol in a small bottle when you go out of the
house.

Lesson
1 Using Adjectives
Words are very powerful. There are words that can be used to describe persons,
places, things, animals, or events. Words to describe them can be colors, numbers,
quality, and feelings. They can also be used to express thoughts in sentences.
It is important to learn how to use these words correctly so that you will be able
to communicate and express yourself well.
In this module, you will be working on activities and exercises for you to be able
to identify adjectives in texts, compare objects, and how to use them in order.

1
What’s In

Directions: Let us compare. Complete the table below. Write your answer on your
answer sheet.
Degree of Comparison of Regular Adjectives

A. Comparing one-syllable adjectives

Positive Comparative Superlative

1. big bigger biggest
2. deep deepest
3. fast faster
4. high highest
5. pretty prettier

Example:

The pig is big.

The rhinoceros is bigger than the pig.
The elephant is the biggest among
the three animals.

How did you compare the three

animals? What words did you use to
compare them? How did you form the
comparative degree? How did you
form the superlative degree?

Let us have another activity.

Directions: Let us compare. Complete the table below.

Write your answer on your answer sheet.

B. Comparing two or more syllables adjectives

Positive Comparative Superlative
1. beautiful more beautiful most beautiful
2. careful most careful
3. dangerous less dangerous
4. elegant least elegant
5. powerful more powerful

Example:

An influenza is fatal.
An Ebola virus is more fatal than influenza.
Corona virus is the most fatal among the three.

How did you compare the three viruses? What word

did you use to compare them? What is added to the
adjective in the comparative form? What word is added to the superlative form?

2
Degree of Comparison of Irregular Adjectives

Positive Comparative Superlative

1. good better best
2. bad worse worst
3. little less least
4. many/much More most
5. some More most

Let us compare these three foods:

A hamburger is a good food.

A camote que is a better food than hamburger.
Ripe banana is the best among the three.

How did you compare the three foods? What word did you use to compare
camote que and hamburger? What word did you use to compare the banana?

Great! You are done answering. How many correct answers did you get? If
you got 5, great! 3-4, you got it! 2, good! If you got 0–1, it’s alright! There is always
a room for improvement. Do not worry. There are more activities for you!
Always remember that adjectives have degrees of comparison. We have the
positive degree, comparative degree, and superlative degree.
In comparing one-syllable adjectives, in the positive degree you don’t
need to compare. You only describe the subject or topic. In the comparative
degree, you compare two so you add -er to the root word, and in the superlative
degree you compare three so you add -est to the root word.
In comparing two or more syllables adjectives, you need to add another
adjective to compare, like more or less, in the comparative degree and least or
most in the superlative degree.
In comparing irregular adjectives, you need to memorize the degree of
comparison because they change the spelling.
This time, let us proceed to the next activity.

3
What’s New

Directions: Read the short story. Analyze it and answer the questions that follow.
Write the answer on your answer sheet.

Peter and Pan

Once upon a time, there were two brothers named Peter and Pan
who always competed against each other. No matter how hard Peter
tried, Pan always did everything to do better. Peter is one year older
than his brother Pan. And when they measured their heights, Peter is
one foot taller than his brother.
They loved kicking the soccer ball but no matter how Pan tried,
Peter always kicked the ball farther than his brother Pan.
When they played basketball too, Peter always jumped higher
than his brother. Finally, when they ran to the finish line, Peter always
has a couple of seconds faster than Pan.
Pan was going to give up on being the best because his brother
was always better than everything he did.
Peter and Pan were both exhausted. Their mom called them back
in the house for lunch. They sat down at the table but it was Peter who
was hungrier than Pan. He ate his whole meal.
At the end, both boys realized that in life, no one is best at
everything and that no one is better than anybody.

Comprehension. Questions:
1. Who are the two bothers?
2. Who is more competitive?
3. Why did Pan almost give up on everything?
4. Who is better in basketball?
5. At the end, what did the two boys realize?
Great! You are done answering. How many correct answers did you get? If you
got 5, great! 3-4, you got it! 2, good! If you got 0–1, it’s alright! There is always a room
for improvement. Do not worry. There are more activities for you!

What is It

Past Form of the Verb

The past form of an action word is used to talk about something that happened some
time ago. It is used to express an action that started and finished at a specific time in
the past. It is also called past tense.

Past time expressions:

yesterday, last year, last month, last week, long time ago
• I saw my favorite toy yesterday.
• My parents got married 10 years ago.

These actions are done.

RULES IN FORMING THE PAST FORM OF REGULAR VERBS

1. Add only -d if a regular verb ends in one or more vowels.

Examples:
bake – baked smile – smiled
type – typed dance – danced

2. Add -ed if a regular verb ends in consonant.

Examples:

cook – cooked wash – washed

3. When the verb ends in the consonants b, n, p, or g, double the consonant and
add -ed to form the past form.

4. When the verb ends in y, change y to i and add –ed to form the past form.

Irregular verbs are action words that don’t end in –d or -ed. They form the past form
by changing their spelling.
