ASSESSING THE

EFFECTIVENESS OF FILTERED
CULVERT DRAINAGE
AT OSMEÑA EXT. ZONE 5 BRGY. 26 CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY
CHAPTER ONE
PROBLEM AND SETTING
1.1. INTRODUCTION
Every year, millions of pounds
of solid waste and other pollutants go
in oceans. Philippines has ranked as
the third largest contributor of
mismanaged plastic entering the ocean
each year. Some of the solid waste
ends up on our coastlines, beaches,
and also clog our drainage system.

3
1.1. INTRODUCTION
Cagayan de Oro City has been
experiencing mismanage of plastics
and clogged drainage due to solid
waste. When the heavy rain comes it
cause flood. Another critical point in
the city wherein mismanaged of solid
waste and clogged drainage occur is in
Zone 5 Brgy. 26 Osmeña extension,
which is the most affected in recent
Typhon Odette.

4
1.1. INTRODUCTION
This study seeks to evaluate
and assess the effectiveness if there is
a filtered drainage for solid waste in
the Zone 5 Brgy 26.

5
1.1. INTRODUCTION
Drainage Filter, is most useful
device to protect our environment
from harmful objects such as plastics
and other waste materials that we
could possibly found in the ocean.
Drain filters have been widely used in
certain nations for numerous years,
although they are not a widespread
device in the Philippines.

6
1.1. INTRODUCTION
Having a drain filter could give
us several benefits to our environment
such as Flood Prevention: There will
be fewer floods as a result of
congested stormwater systems,
Pollution Prevention in rivers, lakes,
beaches, and the ocean and the cities
will be able to maintain their
stormwater drainage clean.

7
1.2. STATEMENT OF THE
PROBLEM
Flooding is the most serious
issue encountering the community
in brgy 26. When there are natural
disasters, such as rainfall, the water
in the drainage system rises rapidly
due to solid waste that has become
clogged. Rapidly rising water
levels may pose a serious threat to
those who live in that specific area.

8
1.2. STATEMENT OF THE
PROBLEM
Inadequate waste disposal
can cause a clog in the drainage
system. Also, one of the reasons
why people in that area are
experiencing this type of problem
is a lack of filter for waste such as
plastic bottles, cans, and others that
can clog the drainage, and also
other solid waste may enter the sea
water since the drainage is
connected to it.

9
1.2. STATEMENT OF THE
PROBLEM
Proper disposal or proper
maintenance of the drainage system
can reduce the probability of
flooding; these are known as the
3R's, which are Reduce, Reuse, and
Recycle; however, the people who
live there are not cooperating in
this type of activity. Without
cooperation and filter in drainage
will be a major issue.

10
1.3. OBJECTIVES

The main objective of this study is to prevent solid waste from

blocking the drainage system. The following tasks must be completed
during the analysis process:
1. To propose drainage filter. It involves:
i. To trap solid waste that can reduced flood when heavy rainfall
occurred
ii. To prevent solid waste from entering the ocean
iii. To assess the cleanliness of the drainage

11
1.4. SCOPE AND
LIMITATIONS

This research shall

limit to the study area around
Zone 5 Brgy. 26 (Figure 1.4).
This study focus on the
prevention of solid waste from
culvert drainage.

12
1.5. EXPECTED OUTPUT
This study ought to provide
solution to the aforementioned problem
by making a filter which trap the solid
waste flowing and clogged in the main
drainage that connected to the sea
water. By having this one, we may at
least prevent the solid waste entering
the sea water and clogged our drainage
system. Thus, one step to this
nationwide problem regarding solid
waste and clogged drainage
