QUESTION ONE- 30 MARKS

a) The roots of the quadratic equation 2 x 2  7 x  4  0 are α and β. Find an equation

b) Using rule or defining property method, explain the meaning of the following terms as
used in set theory
i. Union of sets (1 mark)
(ii)Intersection of sets (1mark)

c) The 6th term of a G.P is16 and the third term is2.Find the first term .common ratio and
the sum of the first 6 terms. (4marks)

d) A particle moves along a straight line in such a way that its distance from a fixed point
on the line after t seconds is S meters , where S =5t2.+1 Find

(i)Its velocity after 3 seconds and 20 seconds.


(ii) Its acceleration after 2 seconds and 20 seconds (6marks)

e) By completing the square method, solve the equation

X2 - 8X + 11 = 0 (5mks)
f) What is the criterion based on decision making under uncertainty (5mks)
g) Define the following terms giving an example in each case (5mks)

(IV) Complementary set

b) 100 students were asked whether they had taken courses in any of the three
areas: Sociology, Anthropology and History. The results were:

45 had taken Sociology,


38 had taken Anthropology,
21 had taken History,
18 had taken Sociology and Anthropology,
9 had taken Sociology and History,
4 had taken History and Anthropology and
23 had taken no course in any of the areas.
i. Draw a Venn diagram that will show the results of the survey (3 marks)
ii. How many students took all the 3 subjects? (3 marks)

QUESTION 3 (15 MARKS)


a. Sketch the curve Y = X (X-1) (X-2) by finding Y-intercept, X-intercept, the turning
points (maximum and minimum) and graphing the sketch.
Hence find the area enclosed between the curve and the X-axis. (10mks)
b. A farm rents its premises and the rental agreement provides for a regular annual
increase of 2500 pounds. If the rent in the first year is 8500 pounds what is the
rent in the 10th year?
How much rent in total did the farm pay for each premise over the 10 years (5mks)
