SOME DEFINITIONS OF LEADERSHIP Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it. – Dwight D. Eisenhower Leadership is the ability of an individual or a group of individuals to influence and guide followers or other members of an organization Leaders help themselves and others to do the right things. They set direction, build an inspiring vision, and create something new. Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go to "win" as a team or an organization; and it is dynamic, exciting, and inspiring.

Cont… “Leadership is the act of influencing/serving others out of Christ’s interests in their lives so they accomplish God’s purposes for and through them,” according to Bill Lawrence, president of Leader Formation International, at Bible.org.

Cont… Christian leadership is not rooted in worldly notions of success, such as the love of money or power. Jesus Himself spoke against this when expressing the importance of serving others. Mathew 20:25-28.

Cont… Effective Leader
-Creates an inspiring vision of the future.
-Motivates and inspires people to engage with that vision. -Manages delivery of the vision. -Coaches and builds a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.

Cont… There is no finer example for Christian leadership than our Lord Jesus Christ. He declared, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). It is within this verse that we see the perfect description of a Christian leader. He is one who acts as a shepherd to those “sheep” in his care.

Cont… The shepherd is one who has several roles in regard to his/her sheep. He/she leads, feeds, nurtures, comforts, corrects and protects. The shepherd of the Lord’s flock leads by modeling godliness and righteousness in his own life and encouraging others to follow his example.
TANZANIA FELLOWSHIP OF EVANGELICAL STUDENTS - TAFES ARUSHA 2022 10
Cont… Of course, our ultimate example—and the One we should follow—is Christ Himself. The Apostle Paul understood this: “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). The Christian leader is one who follows Christ and inspires others to follow Him as well.
TANZANIA FELLOWSHIP OF EVANGELICAL STUDENTS - TAFES ARUSHA 2022 11
Cont… The Christian leader is also a feeder and a nourished of the sheep, and the ultimate “sheep food” is the Word of God.

Cont… • The Bible—not psychology or the world’s wisdom—is the only diet that can produce healthy Christians.
• “Man does not live on bread alone but on every
word that comes from the mouth of the LORD” (Deuteronomy 8:3).

Cont… Leaders are not to oppress and overpower others with their authority, like the Gentiles practiced. Instead, leaders serve others.

Christian Leadership Principles 1. Love God is love (1 John 4:8) and “the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:5). Expressing the power and influence of the love of God is difficult to overemphasize. In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul famously wrote about the transformational nature of love and how it is greater than spiritual gifts like faith and hope. Jesus told His disciples that other people will know them by their love (John 13:35).

Love Love is central to Christianity and every Christian. Any Christian leader should be driven in his or her life by the love of God in anything that he or she does. In this light, may other people recognize the heart and motives of that leader.

2. Self-development Jesus often “constantly slipped away to spend time with God.
One of the most striking examples of this is when Jesus
prayed in the garden at Gethsemane just before His arrest. Jesus knew “all things that would come upon Him” (John 18:4), including the painful flogging and crucifixion.
Luke 22:41-44

Cont… Christian leaders can follow Jesus’ example of seeking God for insight into His will and for strength. -Becoming more righteous is a lifelong process for all Christians, and leaders need to make time to grow spiritually

3. Motivation Instead of misleading or exploiting people, good leaders motivate others, Grunlan said In Nehemiah 2:17, “Nehemiah fearlessly motivated the people to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem,” Grunlan wrote. “He laid out a vision, he shared a plan and he reassured God’s people that God was with them. When we are moving people for our benefit, we manipulate and exploit them. But when we call people to a higher purpose, we motivate them.”

4. Correction “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10: 24-25). Be at peace among yourselves. Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all” (1 Thessalonians 5:13-14). And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will” (2 Timothy 2:23-26). TANZANIA FELLOWSHIP OF EVANGELICAL STUDENTS - TAFES ARUSHA 2022 20 How can Christian leaders approach correcting others in the right way? Lawrence offers the following tips; •By understanding their temperaments •By respecting their concerns •By believing in their gifts •By supporting their dreams •By challenging their flaws

5. Integrity
Good leaders practice and value
integrity.
Righteous lips are the delight of kings,
And they love him who speaks what is right.– Proverbs 16:13
TANZANIA FELLOWSHIP OF EVANGELICAL STUDENTS - TAFES ARUSHA 2022 22
Cont… “People don’t follow leaders who lack integrity,” Grunlan said. “Integrity involves words as well as actions. Integrity involves practicing what we preach, being consistent and dependable, doing what we say we will do and living in such a way that others will trust us.”

2022 23 Follower of God’s Will “Is there anything more important in a leader than he or she seeking God’s direction?” Rinehart asked. “A good leader seeks the Lord, commits his way to the Lord and the Lord establishes the next steps.”
TANZANIA FELLOWSHIP OF EVANGELICAL STUDENTS - TAFES ARUSHA 2022 24
Cont… The preparations of the heart belong to man, But the answer of the tongue is from the LORD. … Commit your works to the LORD, and your thoughts will be established. A man’s heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.– Proverbs 16:1, 3, 9
TANZANIA FELLOWSHIP OF EVANGELICAL STUDENTS - TAFES ARUSHA 2022 25
Cont… As Christians in the world today, we suffer many injuries to our spirits, and we need compassionate leaders who will bear our burdens with us, sympathize with our circumstances, exhibit patience toward us, encourage us in the Word, and bring our concerns before the Father’s throne.

2022 26 Cont… Just as the shepherd used his crook to pull a wandering sheep back into the fold, so the Christian leader corrects and disciplines those in his care when they go astray. Without rancor or an overbearing spirit, but with a “spirit of gentleness” (Galatians 6:1), those in leadership must correct according to scriptural principles
TANZANIA FELLOWSHIP OF EVANGELICAL STUDENTS - TAFES ARUSHA 2022 27
Cont… • Correction or discipline is never a pleasant experience for either party, but the Christian leader who fails in this area is not exhibiting love for those in his care. • “The LORD disciplines those he loves” (Proverbs 3:12), and the Christian leader must follow His example.
TANZANIA FELLOWSHIP OF EVANGELICAL STUDENTS - TAFES ARUSHA 2022 28
6. Protection Other role of the Christian leader is that of protector. The shepherd who was lax in this area soon found that he regularly lost sheep to the predators who prowled around—and sometimes among—his flock.
TANZANIA FELLOWSHIP OF EVANGELICAL STUDENTS - TAFES ARUSHA 2022 29
Cont… The predators today are those who try to lure the sheep away with false doctrine, dismissing the Bible as quaint and old fashioned, insufficient, unclear, or unknowable. These lies are spread by those against whom Jesus warned us: “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves” (Matthew 7:15).
TANZANIA FELLOWSHIP OF EVANGELICAL STUDENTS - TAFES ARUSHA 2022 30
Note leadership is a position of humble, loving service. Church leadership is ministry, not management. Those whom God designates as leaders are called not to be governing monarchs, but humble slaves; not slick celebrities, but laboring servants. Those who would lead God’s people must above all exemplify sacrifice, devotion, submission, and lowliness. Jesus Himself gave us the pattern when He stooped to wash His disciples' feet, a task that was customarily done by the lowest of slaves (John 13). If the Lord of the universe would do that, no church leader has a right to think of himself as a bigwig.”
