WEEK 3

SKILLS NECESSARY FOR PRESERVATION OF OUR TRADITIONS, CUSTOMS BELIEFS AND


CULTURE IN NIGERIA.

1. Human relations skills.


2. Communication skills.
3. Friendship skills.
4. Social cultural skills.

Skill is the ability to do something well. Passing of customs or beliefs of a people from
one generation to another is known as tradition while custom is the traditional way of
behaving or acting. However, it is the tradition and customs of the people that form their
culture. Simply put, culture is the way of life of people.

For Nigeria to preserve her diverse traditions, customs and beliefs, the following skills
are necessary and essential.

1. Human relations skills: This means ability to relate well with people irrespective of
their native tribe, race etc. We should be able to tolerate each other.

2. Communication skills: This is the ability to express oneself freely in the language
one understands best. Children can be taught in their mother’s tongue at the
primary and junior secondary levels.

3. Friendship skills: To be open, transparent, honest and trustworthy and to be able


to mix freely with fellow Nigerians.

4. Social cultural skills: This is the ability to be inquisitive in other people’s traditions,
marriage, ceremony, festival, greetings etc. Also works of arts and crafts in form
of exhibition of textile, sculptures, modeling and painting should be encouraged.

FACTORS THAT ENSURE THE PRESERVATIONS OF OUR TRADITIONS, CUSTOMS AND


BELIEFS.
1. Formation of associations that promote cultural values of Nigeria e.g. Ohaneze
NdiIgbo, Egbe Akomolede Yoruba. Such associations organize seminar,
symposium and workshops.
2. Display of traditional music: Each tribe’s music and folk songs are used in such
traditional ceremonies like wedding, initiation of boys into adulthood, new yam
festivals.
3. Mode of dressing and medications: Emphasis should be placed on native mode
of dressing, hair do, cooking and diet. Also, more research into medicinal roots
and herbs should be carried out.
4. Inclusion of notable writings: There are many Nigerians who have written
notable, academic works having to do with the culture of Nigerians. Some of
them are J.F Ade Ajayi, Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe. People should be
encouraged to read such works.
WEEK 4

NATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS, NATIONAL INTEGRITY AND NATIONAL UNITY

National consciousness is a strong attachment of the people to their uniqueness,


oneness and identity. It is the awareness of what unites the people, their origin,
resources and government.

National integrity is national identity or national integration. It has to do with the unity
of a nation.

National unity means oneness or sense of togetherness of a nation

IMPORTANCE OF NATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS, NATIONAL INTEGRITY AND


NATIONAL UNITY

1. National consciousness, national integrity and national unity will promote peace, unity
and harmony in the country

2. It will promote political and other forms of development in the country

3. It will lay good foundation for economic and social development. A wider market is
made available and foreign investment is encouraged

4. It will reduce conflicts e.g tribal and religious inspired conflicts

5. It will open the door for international relationships

6. It will enable Nigerians to work towards the achievement or attainment of common


goals

WEEK 5

HOW TO PROMOTE NATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS, NATIONAL INTEGRITY AND


NATIONAL UNITY
1. Inter-marriage: This is a situation when an individual marries from another tribe
(culture).
2. Hospitality: This is an act of caring for others irrespective of their tribe or social
background.
3. Tolerance: Tolerance is needed because it makes us to live together in unity
inspite of differences in religious beliefs, characters, languages and so on.
4. Non-discrimination: This is a deliberate act of not being selective in showing
kindness to others.
5. Strict implementation of federal character.
6. Implementation of the rule of law.
7. Creation of jobs.
8. Improved social amenities.
9. Continuation in N.Y.S.C programs and unity schools (federal universities).
10. Adequate citizenship education.

FACTORS THAT PREVENT THE PROMOTION OF NATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS,


INTEGRITY AND UNITY IN NIGERIA

1. Tribalism
2. Selfishness
3. Presence of insecurity
4. Lack of tolerance
5. Mass unemployment
6. Bad governance
7. Presence of bribery and corruption
