Cause
The crankshaft, and or, the camshaft gear teeth, may get broken or damaged in some cases when the engine is running
under high load conditions.
Action
A new polishing method and heat treatment process has been implemented in the gear manufacturing. This will provide
higher durability and reliability of the gears than before.
Mainly, the Volvo D7D engine has experienced this failure, but the solutions described in this service bulletin will be applied
to all Volvo engine variants between 4 and 7 liters in size.
In case of a field failure, even if only one of the gears is damaged or broken, replace both the complete crankshaft and
camshaft assemblies with new ones at the same time.
The engine serial number break, for these improvements to be introduced on the Volvo D7D engine, is ESN 10774460.
