Rhetorical Analysis in Disney Songs

Rhetorical Analysis Notes:

- Rhetoric: Using language to construct meaning
- Rhetorical Device: Anything that a speaker uses to construct meaning
- Rhetorical Choice: Anything a speaker does to construct meaning
- Purpose: What the audience is supposed to understand from the rhetoric
- Rhetorical Situation:
- Exigence
- Audience
- Writer
- Purpose
- Context
- Message
- Both literary and rhetorical analysis require a descriptive response rather than an
evaluative response
- Rhetorical Analysis Tips:
1. Try to find two to three choices. Just enough to explain deeply for each choices
2. Write clear sentences that say what you mean
3. Think about how you should incorporate SPACECAT elements into your response
4. Don’t use big words to make yourself sound smarter, they just make the text more
confusing, but keep an academic tone
- Introduction:
- Explain what the text is, using SPACECAT as a guide
- Describe and list the rhetorical devices used in the text
- In timed writing, you will normally not need an introduction paragraph unless
directed to have one
- Try not to close off your introduction by limiting your reasons to two or three in
your thesis statement
- Provide a two to three sentence summary of the socio-historical context of the
time period within the piece which you are analyzing give your reader some
context about what is happening in history at the time the text was made
- Body:
- You don’t need to write about each of the strategies in separate paragraphs
- Do not use pathos or logos or ethos, explain how there is pathos, logos, or ethos in
the text and how this impacts the audience
- Conclusion:
- Restate the thesis
- Don’t just say “For emphasis”
- Remember to think about the specific audience and why the author might want to
appeal to them
- Thesis:
- Response to the prompt with a defensible thesis
- Evidence and Commentary:
- Reference the text
- Make sure the commentary refers back to the thesis often and remains relevant to
the thesis
- Sophistication:
- Demonstrates complexity of thought and depth of understanding

Disney Rhetorical Analysis:

1. The following lines are delivered by King Louie, one of the main antagonists from Walt
Disney’s The Jungle Book. In this scene, King Louie has just met Mogali—a boy from the
village—for the first time; King Louie apparently needs his help. Read the lines. Then, in a
well-developed paragraph, analyze how King Louie uses rhetorical strategies to achieve his
purpose as he addresses the young boy.

In the Disney animated movie, the Jungle Book, king of the apes named King Louie who is the
main antagonist in the movie just met a boy from a nearby village named Mogali and claims to
need Mogali’s help. After meeting Mogali, Louie immediately tries to strike a deal with him.
While talking to Mogali, King Louie uses an upbeat tone and frequent repetition ultimately
convincing Mogali to trust King Louie, which is important for King Louie to achieve his ultimate
goal, learning to make fire.
