4. As stated above, the gerund has only two grammatical categories: the category of voice (active and
passive) and the category of correlation (perfect and non-perfect)

Note 2: A prior action can also be expressed by a non-perfect gerund after the following verbs and
prepositions, though a perfect gerund is also possible after them:

I don’t remember hearing / having heard this legend before.
On leaving / having left the house, we went to the railway station.
Note 3: The following verbs and the adjective require the active form of the gerund, though the
expressed meaning is passive:

5. As there is no gerund in Russian or Ukrainian, the English gerund can be translated into these
languages by the following language units:
a) by a noun, e.g.
Dancing has not begun yet. = Танцы еще не начались. / Танці ще не почалися.
b) by an infinitive, e.g.
Before going to bed, Jack checked all the locks in the house. = Перед тем как пойти спать,

c) by participle I, e.g.

Note. There is a tendency to translate active forms of the gerund by any unit listed above, while
the passive forms are often rendered by a clause.

GERUNDIAL PHRASES
1. In a sentence, the gerund can occur
1) singly, i.e. without accompanying words, e.g.
Overeating is out of the question.
2) in gerundial phrases, i.e. when a gerund has one or several dependent words (an object, attribute
or adverbial modifier), e.g.
Mary tried to calm the child by (her) telling (gerund) him a story (objects).
There is no mistake about his (nominal element, pronoun) graduating (verbal element, gerund).
Note 2: a gerundial phrase can be formed without the initial nominal element, but then it loses its
predicative character and emphasizes the process expressed by the gerund rather than the doer of the
action expressed by the nominal element, compare
Mary complained about having no spare time whatsoever. (gerundial phrase WITHOUT the
initial nominal element; the focus is on the process of having no time)
