Lesson Plan

In
Mathematics
Date: November 26, 2021

I. Objectives:

At the end of the lesson the Grade 8 students will able to:

a. Add rational expressions with common denominators.

b. Identify the least common denominator of two or more

rational expressions.

c. Add rational expressions with unlike denominators.

d. Realize the connection between adding rational numbers

and adding rational expressions.

II. Subject Matter:

A. Topic
(Operations on Rational Algebraic Expressions)
- Addition

common-denominator/

C. Materials
Virtual White board
PowerPoint Presentation
D. Time Allotment
2 hours

III. Procedure:

- Before the teacher will proceed to motivation the teacher must

ask these questions:
1. What are the three major types of fractions?

A. Motivation

- The teacher will let the students add fraction based or

using real life applications or experiences.

B. Lesson Proper

● After internalizing the answers of the students the

teacher will introduce the following.

Discuss the following examples of fractions:

1.) 2 + 1 2.) 3 + 1
4 4 5 5

Steps on how to add rational algebraic

expressions with LIKE DENOMINATORS:
1. Add the numerator.
2. Copy the common denominator.
3. Factor the numerator and cancel out or divide
common factors.
4. Simplify.

Write two examples with common denominators for
participation:
1.) 2a + 3 2.) 10c + 16c
4b 4b 13 13

Give the students a similar problem to work on

individually.
1.) 8d - 3 + 4d + 12
9 9

Write several examples on the board and discuss

solutions with the class. These examples should
contain rational expressions with unlike denominators
and should increase in difficulty level.  After the
first example a, the instructor should discuss the general
steps for solving a problem with unlike denominators,
list them on the board.
1.) 2 + 1
2 4

Steps on how to add rational algebraic expressions

with UNLIKE DENOMINATORS:
1. Factor the denominator completely.
2. Find the LCD.
3. Write the equivalent expression of each rational
expression using the LCD.
4. Add the numerators and keep the
LCD.

Write two examples with common denominators on the

virtual white board and discuss solutions with the class.
1.) 5 + 3 2.) 5 + 2__
2 2 4
x x 8m n 6m3n4

Give the students a similar problem to work on

individually.
1.) 5 + 7__
3
ab ab2

C. Generalization

• The teacher will ask the following questions to the

students:

1. Why is it important to know how to add fractions?

2. Why do you think that it is important to familiarize

fractions in real life application?

D. Application

● The teacher will let the students make real life

applications of fractions. Solve problems on adding
rational algebraic expressions.

IV. Evaluation:

● Perform the indicated operation and simplify the

answer. Turn in the worksheet to your instructor when
completed.

V. Assignment:
Watch videos and study in advance on how to subtract
rational algebraic expressions.
