What I Need to Know
Most of the time, we read texts to be informed. However, not all texts that we read
must be consumed and transferred because some of these provide biased details that are
unsupported by facts.
Biased authors often fail to establish logical reasons supporting their ideas or
opinions. We need to be aware of biased information because it may change the way we
think.
This module is done to understand what bias is and the features that you need to know
for you not to be tricked.
In this module, you are expected to:
a. examine biases (for or against) made by the author; and
b. lift biases (for or against) made by the author.
What I Know
Directions: Choose the letter of the best answer. Write your answer on a separate sheet of
paper.

4. When does a text contain bias?
A. when there is simplification
B. when there is exaggeration
C. when there is logical argument

Lesson
WHAT IS THE AUTHOR'S
1 BIAS?
An important part of evaluating an author's ethos is identifying the author's bias.
Bias is any opinion that influences a person's thoughts, feelings, or actions. A person can be
biased against something or have a bias for something. An author's bias is an opinion or
prejudice that affects that author's writing. It prevents the author from being completely
neutral about the topic or issue about which she/he is writing.
The author's bias is the preference or opinion that prevents one from approaching
something with a neutral point of view. It is not always bad, but it does not belong in some
types of non-fiction when a statement reflects a partiality preference or prejudice for or
against a person, object, or idea.
The author may state some of his/her biases directly by telling the reader his/her
opinions on certain topics or admitting that she/he has a conflict of interest or preference. But
when an author does not acknowledge his/her own bias, a skilled reader can infer what an
author's bias maybe by looking at the author's diction and use of evidence.

Crying is an infant's natural way of communicating his/her mother. When a child cries,
it only means something; either he/she is hungry, restless, uncomfortable, sleepy, or not
feeling well. And this meaning is taken ordinarily by a mother's instinct. That is why
everybody says that all mothers know best.

Obedience is one of the virtues that is forgotten by the youth of this era. Most of the
