I
t seems appropriate, as we begin the new year, to urge MMI readers to be wise and
subscribe to save time and money! For UK readers at present a single issue of MMI costs
£4.95, which multiplied by twelve is £59.40. A subscription, on the other hand, currently
costs £49.50, which is a saving of almost £10.00 over the year. These savings also apply
to international subscribers and solve any issues you might have in obtaining your favourite
modelling titles. I am familiar with several specious arguments offered against subscriptions,
and recent marketplace experiences with other publishers may have prejudiced some against
parting with their cash up front, but Guideline Publications have not only made it through the
best part of two years of pandemic-related chaos without missing an issue, but we have also
added new titles to our catalogue and now cover aircraft, armour, railways, trucks, cars, and
more. Moreover, the £49.50 cost of a year’s UK subscription is cheaper than a newly released
1/35-scale kit, so instead of piling up three of the latest releases with excellent intentions, just
David Grummitt buy two kits and subscribe to your favourite modelling magazine. You’ll get far more usage
Managing Editor out of a copy of MMI each month than you will from yet another box gathering dust in the
Guideline Publications loft! Finally, and on a more serious note, bear in mind the current economic situation, which
david@guidelinepublications.co.uk is heading downhill at a rate of knots. As the cost of printing materials goes up, magazines
will have little choice but to follow. Cover prices may have to increase, but if you have a
subscription in hand, it won’t affect the magazines you will already have paid for, and you’ll get
them delivered to your door in advance of the newsstands. It makes sense to me, so visit www.
guidelinepublications.co.uk and look at our range of print and digital subscription options or
call +44 (0)1582 668411.
This month’s issue contains another bumper crop of modelling and armour-related content
covering the Great War to contemporary forces. Beginning with World War I, Ilya Yut builds
Copper State Models’ new 1/72 Lancia 1ZM armoured car. Sticking with small scale and
weapons of the Great War, Stefan Szymanski returns with Hauler’s beautiful Skoda howitzer.
For fans of World War II armour, I’m delighted to welcome Russian modeller Nikolay Grinev to
these pages with Bronco Models’ M24 Chaffee. Sergey Osipov returns with Trumpeter’s
L4500A with 3.7cm, while Özgur Güner concludes his Dragon T-34/76 with a lesson in basic
painting and weathering techniques. Another new name, Fabio Mosca, debuts in MMI with a
stunning build of Dragon’s StuG III based closely on a period photo taken at Cassino in Italy
after the great battle there in 1944. Staying in the Italian theatre, Thomas Anderson concludes
his Armour in Profile article on Italian AFVs in German service. Moving to modern armour,
we welcome back Kreangkrai Paojinda who builds Hobbyboss’s early IDF Nagmachon heavy
APC. Finally, Ralph Zwilling brings us bang up to date with a reference article on the latest
iteration of the Leopard 2, the Bundeswehr’s new Leopard 2A7V. Until next month, stay safe
and happy modelling.

The chassis of the Italian

the technology of the earlier

against Allied troops, the
Semovente was undoubtedly
more capable than Italian
medium tanks. However, the
fundamental design
disadvantages of the assault
guns should not be
underestimated. The lack of a
turret limited the possibilities
for their use in mountainous
Italy. This, however, also
applied to assault guns of
German manufacture.
All Semoventi, even those
based on the wider M43
chassis, had a crew of only
three men. The commander
was thus forced to operate the
gun as gunner. This meant that
he could not concentrate on

problem could be better
solved in the slightly larger
German assault guns with
their four-man crew.
Many of the problems
mentioned in the reports were
caused by their generally poor
mechanical condition and lack
of maintenance of the
vehicles. However, this was
the responsibility of the
Germans. Often, important
details such as training on the
equipment and the supply of
spare parts were not handled
or were handled only poorly.
Moreover, the slowly growing
resistance among the Italian
population was also to lead to
sabotage at all levels, from the
manufacturing plant to
logistics.

fitted to the turret sides.
Due to the new P 25000 HD

transmission ratios, the
Leopard 2A7V is now again
able to adequately perform
the tactical ‘jump’ from cover.
However, this advantage
comes at the cost of a reduced
top speed, which is anyway
rather a pure nominal value
without any practical use. In
addition, the vehicle receives
a 570 Z end connector track
adapted to the increased
weight, new sprockets,
reinforced torsion bars and
four additional hydraulic bump

In addition to an ATTICA
third-generation thermal sight
and a new eye-safe laser

have an additional display to
the left of his control handles.
This allows him to observe the

also includes a modern NBC

system is used not only for

cooling the electronics room
and the ammunition room in
the turret. The old NBC

of the hull can now be used for
another cooling unit with up to
10kW cooling capacity
especially for the driver. By
means of a hose, the
tempered air is now also fed
into the driver’s compartment,
which had been a requirement
of the tank crews for a very

All 68 vehicles originally
