INSULATION PROCEDURE

1. SCOPE
This procedure is applicable for external protection insulation of the
Storage Tank & Deaerator PPL#1 Project.
2. PURPOSE
This procedures defines the guideline for external protection insulation of
Storage Tank & Deaerator PPL#1 Project is complete.
3. RESPONSIBILITY
3.1. Site Manager
To ensure that insulation process are adequately planned and
executed and that all equipment and material used on site is certified
and conforms to this procedure.
3.2. HSE Manager
 To liaise with all members of the Management
Team, Supervisors on the planning of insulation
process, certification and maintenance of all lifting
appliances as per item.
 To ensure that all persons involved in the
insulation process are competent and suitably trained in
HSE matters for the operations to be performed.
3.3. Supervisor
 To carry out the assessment of the insulation process to provide
such planning, instruction and supervision as necessary for the
task to be undertaken safely.
 To ensure that adequate inspection and maintenance of the
equipment has been carried out.
3.4. Safety Officer

INSULATION PROCEDURE

4.2. Material Insulation.

The term “Mineral Wool is defined as fibrous material manufactured
from natural rock. In general, mineral wool is recommended for all
temperatures.
Data of insulation as follows :
 Rockwol : 100 mm thk
 Wired Blanket Density : 100 kg/m3
 Pipe Section : 120 kg/m3
 Cover Alumunium : 0.8 mm thk
4.3. Installation Insulation
4.3.1. Insulation Anchors
Insulation anchors for fixing the mineral wool blankets shall
installed by the insulation contractor by welding on shell.
Minimum 5 pin per m² are recommended.
The anchors can be made from 30x3mm plate twisted 90° as
indicated in figure 3 (insulation Detail). The maximum distance
between the anchors should not exceed 500mm.
In addition to anchors, soft annealed steel pins ø3mm with
lock plates can be used for fixing the insulation blankets.
When the lock-plates have been installed, the remaining part
of the pins must be bend in a U-Shape, i.e. The ends sticking
into the insulation blankets, in order not to damage the
waterproofing
4.3.2. Installation of material insulation
Installation of insulation material must be as required by the
client mention in the drawing or client spec.
The area of insulation must be covered with insulation material
with conditions condensed to ensure there are no cavities that
are not filled with insulation material and to ensure insulation
functions as required.
To ensure that the installation of insulation material is really
compaction, the dimensions of the insulation material must be
greater than the dimensions of the insulation area with a
minimum size of 1 inch insulation material larger than the
insulation area. See figure 1.
4.3.3. Wire Netting
Wire netting reinforcement must be used for un-wired blankets
i.e. Bonded blankets for temperatures below 250° C.
The wire netting reinforcement must be of 20-25 mm hexagon
galvanised steel mesh with a min. Wire diameter of approx.
ø0.8mm. The netting must fit tightly around the insulation and
must be laced with binding wire.
4.3.4. Binding wire.
Binding wire must be galvanised, soft annealed steel wire 0.5
– 0.8mm diameter. The knots in the wire must be turned
down flush with the surface of the insulation material.

INSULATION PROCEDURE

Each layer of the insulating blankets on deaerator must be

fixed with binding wire at a maximum spacing of 500mm.
4.3.5. Adhesive Tape
The sealing tape must be self-adhesive min. 30mm wide and
must be at least as strong as the waterproofing layer. It must
be waterproof material and of a type which will not lose its
adhesive properties under the relevant service conditions.
4.3.6. Cladding
Cladding should be made 99% pure aluminium sheets, min.
0.8mm thickness.
The joint must overlap by min. 50mm. The joints must be
secured with stainless steel airtight rivets or self-tapping
screws at a maximum spacing of 150mm.
When installing cladding for each connection must face
downward, to prevent rain water or other liquid from entering
the insulation area. See Figure 2
