WHAT'S ABOUT EXPANDED PROGRAM ON
IMMUNIZATION?
The Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) was established to ensure that
infants and children and mothers have access to routinely recommended infant
and childhood vaccines. Six vaccine-preventable diseases were initially included
in the EPI: tuberculosis, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and
measles.

Comprehensive Program

VACCINES:
1. BCG (Bacillus-Calmette-Guerin)
2. Hepatitis B birth dose
3. Oral Poliovirus Vaccine
4. Pentavalent Vaccine
5. Tetanus Toxoid
6. Measles Containing Vaccines (Antimeasles Vaccine, Measles,
Mumps, Rubella)
PROGRAM GOALS:
To reduce the morbidity and mortality among children against the most
common vaccine-preventable diseases.
1. To immunize all infants/children against the most common vaccine-preventable
diseases.
2. To sustain the polio-free status of the Philippines.
3. To eliminate measles infection.
4. To eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus
5. To control diphtheria, pertussis, hepatitis b and German measles.
6. To prevent extra pulmonary tuberculosis among children.
Mandates:
Republic Act No. 10152 “MandatoryInfants and Children Health Immunization Act of 2011 Signed
by President Benigno Aquino III in July 26, 2010. The mandatory includes basic immunization for
children under 5 including other types that will be determined by the Secretary of Health.

Strategies:
1. Routine Immunization through the Reaching Every Barangay (REB) strategy
2. Supplemental Immunization Activity (SIA)
3. Strengthening Vaccine-Preventable Diseases Surveillance
4. Procurement of adequate and potent vaccines and needles and syringes to all health facilities nationwide
NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Promote and support immunization
2. Involved and prepared in all aspects of immunization- education,
managing vaccination, vaccine administration and prescription, and
advisory roles.
3. Successful in overcoming key barriers to full engagement in immunization
activities such as requirement for prescription and other individual,
system and organizational barriers.
4. Supported to prescribe immunizations.
5. Nurses must provide health education and awareness to the community
about the DOH Health Programs.
