Attempt four questions in all. All questions carry equal marks.
Use of simple calculators is allowed.

1. A company wishes to assess the wear resistance of 4 different types of textile by means
of an automatic wear tester. The dependent variable is the weight loss (measured in units
of 0.1 mg) for a piece of textile of standard shape and after being subjected to the wear
tester for a specified time. The independent variable is the type of textile, and there are 4
different types A, B, C and D. Another variable is the position in the tester in that the
tester has four different positions for simultaneous testing of four pieces of textile.

Write the underlying model along with the assumptions for errors and additional
constraints for the given design D1.
At some later stage it was decided that there is another variable that is the round in which
the textiles are tested. The round is of importance because (small) changes in the tester,
air humidity, temperature etc. may influence the measured value. In order to save time
and money only four rounds are carried out.
Do you think there will be a change in the design to be used? If yes, name the design to
be used now? Write the underlying model along with the assumptions for errors and
additional constraints for the newly identified design D2. Arrange the data in the layout
of the new design identified. Discuss advantages and draw-backs of using design D2
instead of design D1 (using positions as blocks) and not taking the rounds into
consideration.

Identify the parameters of BIBD and generate the design. Define residual, derived and
complementary designs. Obtain residual, derived and complementary designs for the
above design along with their parameters. Also verify if the resulting designs are BIBDs.

3. (a) Complete the following table for ANOVA and Expected Mean Squares, where Column
represents the Operators, Rows represent the Order of Assembly and Treatment represent
Assembly Methods, and the observations are assembly time for a coloured television
component.

Test the Hypothesis that the assembly methods do not differ significantly, showing all
steps in general procedure.
Compute Expected Mean squares.

(b) For a 2n factorial experiment in 2k blocks per replicate the total number of confounded
effects is __________ out of which __________ effects are independent and the number
of plots per block will be ______.
(c) Consider an experiment to compare 8 treatments in blocks of size 4. If number of
replications of each treatment is 15 then the design has _________ blocks. The number of
time each treatment pair will appear together in the design is _______.
4. Construct a 25 design in 12 blocks of 8 plots confounding ABC and ADE. Give the
analysis of such a design. Also construct a system of partial confounding for this 25
factorial experiment in blocks of size 8 with 12 blocks, so that at least partial information
can be obtained about three factor interaction components and full information about two
factor interactions and main effects and give ANOVA for the same.

5. Define Resolution of a design. Identify the resolution of the following designs. Two
choices of generators for a 26-2 design are given
(i) 26-2 with E = ABCD, F = ABC
(ii) 26-2 with E = ABC, F = BCD
Which design would you prefer? Give reasons for your preference; write down the alias
structure of the designs to support your answer.
6. A 33 factorial experiment with factors A, B, and C is arranged in two replicates of 3
blocks each. If some of the elements of one of the blocks of each replicate are given as

Write down the contents of the remaining blocks. Also list all the confounded effects and
hence construct a system of partially confounded 33 factorial experiment in blocks of size
9 in 6 blocks, so that at least partial information can be obtained about three factor and
two factor interaction components. Write the ANOVA table for the constructed design.
