Management Team:
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises
and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
Thank you.
Target
Hey! Look around you. Can you see diverse kinds of living things or
organisms? Can you name some? Are you one of them? Have you ever asked yourself
what makes up an organism?
In the earlier grades, you have learned that the human body is composed of
organ systems that work together and that these organ systems are composed of
organs whose functions are related to each other. The heart and the blood vessels
are organs that facilitate the circulation of blood and nutrients to the different parts
of the body; the esophagus, stomach, and intestines are organs that work together
for the digestion of food. The organs are made up of even smaller structures: the
tissues and the cells.
Learning Competency: By the end of this module, you are expected to:

Discover
If you look around you, there are many living things. All these living creatures
are organisms. You are an organism just like the plant and insect shown in figure1.
But, what makes you up and the other organisms around you? An Organism
is made up of organ systems ( see figure 2 ), and Organ systems are made up of
organs. The circulatory system is one of the organ systems with the heart, blood
vessels, and blood as its organs. The heart pumps and circulates blood to the
different parts of the body through the blood vessels. The excretory system is another
organ system. It is made up of different organs which include a pair of kidneys that
help the body eliminate metabolic wastes and maintain internal balance. There are
other organ systems that you will learn in the next grade level.
5
LU_Q2_Science 7_Module3
An Organ is made up of tissues. The heart, kidneys, and other organs are
made up of tissues. This tissue is made up of cells – the basic units of structure and
function in organisms. These cells are grouped together to form complex structures:
tissues, organs, organ systems that make up the organism ( see figure 3 ). If certain
cells were diseased or injured in an organism, the tissue would suffer, the organ,
organ system, and the whole organism would suffer.
Plants are also composed of organ systems: the root and shoot systems ( see
figure 4 ). The root system absorbs water and nutrients; the shoot system moves
them to the different parts of the plant. Flowers are the reproductive organs of plants.
Together with the leaves and the stems, they make up the shoot system. The parts
of the root and shoot systems of the plants are also made up of tissues and cells.
