EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This assignment topic is “Model of industrial relation”. Here, we discuss about 4 types of
models in industrial relation Such as-
• Dunlop’s Model
• Conflict Model
• Social Action Model
• Human Relation Model
First, John T. Dunlop has given a model on industrial relations. Dunlop’s model showing that
analytical subsystem of industrial society. Composed of actors among managers, workers &
government. conflict model is showing that inevitable between the owner of labor and user of
labor. Social actor model explains that the way in which an individual influence the social
structure and makes the society. Human relation model has its origin in the Hawthorne
experiment as it highlights certain policies and technique to improve the moral and efficiency
of employees.

Models of industrial relation

1.1 INTRODUCTION:
Basically, relations between management, workers, trade unions. Industry relations contain of
two words-

➢ Industry
➢ Relation

Model means an informative representation of an object, person or system. In general, all model
has an information processor and output of expected results.

1.2 BACKGROUND:
Different authors and specialists have offered a number of models. We showed that 4 types of
models in the below:

1. Dunlop Model

• John T. Dunlop has given a model on industrial relations


• It has a tremendous impact on IR field
• It is applicable to three broad areas as-

1.IR
within a
country

2.IR
within a
enterprise
3.IR in the
course of
economic
development

Assumption:
Dunlop considered industrial system as the subsystem of society. According to him, IR is
regarded as comprised of four subsystems.

In the following subsystem are-

A=Certain E= context I=Ideology R= rules


Actor

A= Refers to undernoted actors in the IR

• Specialized government agencies


• Hierarchy of managers and their representatives
• Hierarchy of workers

E= Refers to environmental contexts

• Environmental factors that influence actors


• Technological characteristics of work place and work community
• The market context and budgetary constraints
• The locus and distribution of power in larger society

I= refers to ideology

• Set of ideas beliefs held by the actors


• Helps to bind or integrate the system together

R= refers to web of rules

• Procedural
• Substantive
• Distributive

2. Conflict Model

Conflict model exemplifies the structuralism explanation of industrial relations. Industrial


relations occur within a dynamic conflict situation which is permanent and unalterable so long
as the structure of society remains unaltered.

This model has two components as follows-

Second •Alienation

Assumption:
• This model is crucial role in Marxian model on industrial conflict
• Division of labor which is seen by Marx as a mean of promoting wealthy for the
capitalist but restricting even more closely the freedom of the worker
• Factor system of production which is locked upon as the most complete method of
domination of the worker by the capitalist for he can control every activity of labor
• Alienation will not be overcome simply by increasing wages.

3. Social action model

Social action means taking steps to change the things that are wrong in our society and
introducing new ideas and processes for doing better in the future.

Social action model consists of two elements-

First • social behaviour

Second • social relationship

Assumption:

• It's stresses the way in which an individual influence the social structure and makes the
society
• It attempts to study the behavioral influence
• Behavior at work get influenced by quality of HRM and nature of technology
• Sometimes individual peace itself may not ensure health relationship
• May be there are other internal tension among employees which affects their behavior.

4.Human Relation Model

The person behind the concept of the human relations approach is Keith Davis. This model
underlines the need for making the work situations of the organization and uniting the efforts
of the workers.

The purpose is to meet the social, psychological and economic objectives by enhancing the
overall productivity.

The human relations model has four aspect-

Assumption:

• Take care of your employees they will take care of your organization
• Management must learn Ann know the basic needs of employee and should always try
to win the people.
• Basic need may be economic need and psychological needs
• Human relation model has its origin in the Hawthorne experiment as it highlights
certain policies and technique to improve the moral and efficiency of employees
• Industrial conflict is due to inadequate communication and lack of understanding of
interpersonal factors like personality factors.

1.3 CONCLUSION:

This type of models is useful for industry. We can build up relationship between
industry and workers as well.
