EDITOR’S NOTE: Monday, the Herald received a phone call from Grand
Forks resident Bob Rynestad Sr., who inquired about the process of sending
a letter to the editor. The letter, Rynestad said, was about the U.S. women’s
hockey team.
It made us wonder if others also may be interested in writing about the
team and its three area players: Gigi Marvin, Monique Lamoureux-Moran-
do and Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson.
After a callout to readers, here are the letters we received prior to Wednes-
day’s deadline:

ANATOMY OF A GOAL
Grand Forks Herald
Gigi Marvin stood at
center ice, waiting to
take USA’s first shootout
attempt. An Olympic gold
medal was on the line.
In the stands, her father,
Mike, was calm, because he
saw Gigi had a smile on her
face. It reminded him of
fellow Warroad High School
graduate T.J. Oshie in the
2014 Sochi Olympics. Oshie
smiled and was relaxed as
he scored four shootout
goals against Russia.
But that was a
preliminary round game.
This was in overtime of
the gold medal game.
“I was just smiling,” Gigi
said. “I was thinking, ‘How
many times have I done
this at the Gardens or in
the Olympic or outdoors in
Warroad growing up?’ That
was our life.
“Of course, I didn’t plan
on losing the puck and
falling, so T.J. has more
style points on me.”
Marvin’s shootout
attempt didn’t go as
planned, but it worked just
fine.

But as she stickhandled
the puck nearing the top
of the crease, she fumbled
it. Marvin immediately
slammed on the brakes and
reached back to try to get
the puck before it was out
of reach. She corralled it
and threw it on net.
“I just reacted, just
responded,” Marvin said. “I
knew she was anticipating
me doing a deke and
thought maybe (the far

open. Thankfully, I got a
handle on it and it went in
and we all got to celebrate.
“It was exhilarating. I
had five or six friends who
were there and they were

the goalie. I had no idea, I
was just going nuts. I was
so happy. I think you’ve
