Chapter 11: ALGEBRA
Solution of an Equation
The value of a variable in an equation which satisfies the equation
is called a solution to the equation.
Ex:11.5 _Q_3
Pick out the solution from the values given in the brackets next to
each equation. Show that the other values do not satisfy the
equation.
b) n + 12 = 20 (12, 8, 20, 0)
For n = 12, LHS = 12 + 12 = 24, RHS = 20
Here, LHS ≠ RHS
∴ n = 12 is not the solution of the equation
For n = 8, LHS = 8 + 12 = 20, RHS = 20
Here, LHS = RHS
∴ n = 8 is the solution of the equation
For n = 20, LHS = 20 + 12 = 32, RHS = 20
Here, LHS ≠ RHS
∴ n = 20 is not the solution of the equation
For n = 0, LHS = 0 + 12 = 12, RHS = 20
Here, LHS ≠ RHS
∴ n= 0 is not the solution of the equation
c) p – 5 = 5 (0, 10, 5, -5)
d) q/ 2 = 7 (7, 2, 10, 14)
e) r – 4=0 (4, -4, 8, 0)

Ex:11.5_Q_4
a)Complete the table and by inspection of the table find the
solution to the equation
m + 10 = 16

m = 6 is the solution for the equation m + 10 = 16

Chapter 5
UNDERSTANDING ELEMENTARY SHAPES
Turning by two straight angles or 4 right angles in same direction
makes full turn. One complete turn is called one revolution.
𝟏
revolution = 1 right angles
𝟒
𝟏
revolution = 2 right angles
𝟐
𝟑
revolution = 3 right angles.
𝟒

EXERCISE 5.2
1. What fraction of a clockwise revolution does the hour hand of a
clock turn through, when it goes from
(a) 3 to 9

Ans – ½ of a revolution
(b) 4 to 7
(c) 7 to 10
(d) 12 to 9
2. Where will the hand of a clock stop if it
(a) starts at 12 and makes ½ of a revolution, clockwise?

Ans = 6
(b) starts at 2 and makes ½ of a revolution, clockwise?
(c) starts at 5 and makes ¼ of a revolution, clockwise?
(d) starts at 5 and makes ¾ of a revolution, clockwise?
3. Which direction will you face if you start facing
(a) east and make ½ of a revolution clockwise?

Ans – West
(b) east and make 1 ½ of a revolution clockwise?
(c) west and make ¾ of a revolution anti – clockwise?
4. What part of a revolution have you turned through if you stand
facing
(a) east and turn clockwise to face north?

Ans – ¾ of a revolution
(b) south and turn clockwise to face east?
(c) west and turn clockwise to face east?
5. Find the number of right angles turned through by the hour hand
of a clock when it goes from
(a) 3 to 6
Ans – One right angle
(b) 2 to 8
(c) 5 to 11
(d) 10 to 1
6. How many right angles do you make if you start facing
a) south and turn clockwise to west?

Ans – One right angle

(b) north and turn anti – clockwise to east?
(c) west and turn to west?
(d) south and turn to north?
7. Where will the hour hand of a clock stop if it starts
(a) from 6 and turns through 1 right angle?
Ans – 9
(b) from 8 and turns through 2 right angles?
(c) from 10 and turns through 3 right angles?
(d) from 7 and turns through 2 straight angles?
