Lesson Title : Writing a Review (Documentary)

Lesson Target(s) : to write a review about the documentary viewed using different writing techniques

I. Directions: Before writing your article review take note of the given information below.

1. In writing a review take note of the different parts and the elements that consist each of these
parts. The
elements may be arranged in any way.

Example:
Part
Introduction

Elements
Documentaries’ title Director’s/
Anchor’s Name

2. A review in its very essence is a reviewer's individual take on a book or article (film,
performance). Therefore, it is personal in its nature; however, to make it objective we try to avoid--as much
as possible-- using the first person pronouns.
First-person singular - 'I,' 'me,' 'my,' and 'mine
First-person plural - 'we,' 'us,' 'our,' and 'ours
First-person possessive - 'my,' 'mine,' 'our,' and 'ours First-person
subjective - 'I,' 'we,' 'my,' and 'our

We use the third person instead. Now, while sometimes you can’t avoid using the first person in formal
writing, usually you can. As provided by Kentley.edu it’s usually fairly easy to replace what you would have
said in the first person using the third person, like in this example:

In this essay, I have argued that gun control laws should be tightened.

Becomes:

In this essay, it has been argued that gun control laws should be tightened.

Another example:

This made me think about the consequences of gun control laws being abolished.

Becomes:

This prompted some consideration about the consequences of gun control laws being abolished.

One more example:

We then investigated the possibility that there was a government conspiracy behind the gun
control
laws.

Becomes:

Investigation was then carried out into the possibility of a government conspiracy being behind the
gun control laws.

It’s quite common when you’re changing something from first person to third person to change the verb
in the original sentence to a noun and to introduce another. Instead of ‘we then investigated’, we get
‘investigation was then carried out’. In the first case, ‘investigated’ is an active verb; in the second case
‘investigations’ is now a noun and there is new verb - ‘carried’.

3. In writing a review if a review lifts a direct statement from the article being reviewed indicate the
paragraph number only as shown in the examples from the textbook.

4. Provide a complete in-text citation if another source has been cited to support or emphasize the
author's
arguments.

5. Provide your own title. Titles should be catchy and informative. It should reflect and give an
overview
as to the main subject of your review. Write your title after completing your review.

II. Directions: Write a review about the documentary, Ang Iskul kung Bakwit. Make sure to incorporate the
essential parts and elements of a documentary review as discussed last meeting. No need to label the
paragraphs. Expound your analysis by citing information from other sources such as books, similar
documentaries, official social media accounts of registered organizations, newspapers, etc. There
should be at least five (5) citations under the analysis part. Use the given rubric as your guide.

Among the three islands in the Philippines, Mindanao is said to be the most cluttered and disarrayed. It can be traced for
around centuries that war between military officers and terrorists upholding the concept of radicalism are still in conflict
upon one another (Initiatives for International Dialogues, 2019) Communism is being perceived as a threat not just to the
people but to the state as well. Hence, indigenous people in terms of definition are a group of natives who pay great
sacrifices to preservation of culture and tradition that has been passed down generations to generations. Initiatives for
international dialogues covers intellectual discussions about oppression of minorities. Which is why they advocate peace
talks and tackle the concept of sensibility in terms of societal-involved issues. The aforementioned issue shed some light
upon stating the current situation of native Filipinos in the island of Mindanao.

Native Filipinos who have been living in Mindanao for around millenia became subjects and victims of disconcertment.
These people were mistaken for rebels and communists. They became subjects of endless killings, caught-in-between
battles. Educators, students and civilians whose lives were once peaceful ended up leaving their hometown. After the
bloody war between the government and rebels, schools were brought down and closed which left the natives no choice
but to evacuate in order to have access to education. This is where the term “Bakwit” originated, it was adapted from the
English term “Evacuate”, It can also be implied that these natives have no permanent place to stay. They stay from one
place to another in accordance with resources and survival rate. After evacuating from Mindanao, their races scattered
from region to region. Datus, Teachers and the students struggled but was able to establish learning establishments which
are referred to as Bakwit Schools”

According to the 7th grader student in the documentary, the incident of firing and bombing are indeed traumatic. Starting
then, they became people who have no home or permanent residence. It was hard for them to attend school, learn and
strive. These people perceive education as the key to success which is why they still yearn for it even after going through
much lost. These natives are rich in terms of culture but their ancestry is deprived of education, this is the main reason why
they gave it too much importance. The same untold story was expressed by a 12 years old girl named Shahanie. She was
featured in one of the peace movements known as “Save The Children”. She expressed how disrupted the education of the
young natives because of the on-going war. Hence, a teacher who was only a volunteer back then is one a bakwit.

Different government organizations assumed that these young minds are being recruited and have undergone “child
warrior training” against the government. The documentary entitled “Ang iskul kong bakwit” which was narrated and
justified by Atom Araullo is just one angle of endless inquiries of cases facing the same circumstances. In a book written
by Jose Jowel Canuday entitled “Bakwit, the power of the displaced” the truffles of the bakwit people were further
elaborated. Towards the closing end, it can be implied that there is an on-going hierarchy system that is continuously
pinning down in the dumps the people of minorities. And it is something the Filipinos should fear, the government’s
incapability of protecting its citizens.
