There are five conditions that
make the quadrilateral a
parallelogram.

The first condition states that if

both pairs of opposite sides of a
quadrilateral are congruent, then
the quadrilateral is a
parallelogram.

Does anyone know the meaning

of the word congruent?

Congruent means the sides have

the same length.

For example, if AB is 5 units, and

DC is also 5 units, then we can
say that AB ≅ DC .

In dealing with figures, we make

use of lines to mean that the two
elements are congruent.

So with this figure, we can (pressed raised hand button)

conclude that AB ≅ DC, and
BC ≅ AD . So, if I say BC is 8
inches, what is then the length of
AD?

Yes, Ms. Panlilio? Ma’am, it is also 8 inches.

That’s right, Ms. Panlilio. Is that Yes, ma’am.

2PROFED07 Microteaching Plan Team Project
A Detailed Lesson Plan in (Content Area) (Grade Level) developed by (Names of LT Members) of (Year & Section)
(Date of Submission)
clear to everybody?

Going back to the first condition,

if we already knew that
AB ≅ DC, and BC ≅ AD, then
we can already conclude that
ABCD is a parallelogram.

Keep in mind that I used the

conjunction “and” to mean that
there should be two congruent,
opposite sides to conclude that
the figure is a parallelogram.

Let’s apply the first condition in

problems.

If PQRS is a parallelogram. PQ is
4x + 6 inches, and SR is x + 12
inches. What is then the length of
PQ and SR?

4 inches

The first thing that we need to

know is the value of x. Since we
already knew that PQRS is a
parallelogram. We can claim that
PQ ≅ SR , which then means
that 4x + 6 = x + 12.

The next step that we should do

is to separate the numbers
containing variables to one side
of the equation. In that case, we
transpose x to the left side of the
equation, and we transpose 6 to
the right of the equation.

Remember that if we are Negative x

transposing terms, we also need
to change the sign of it. Thus
positive x will become?

2PROFED07 Microteaching Plan Team Project

A Detailed Lesson Plan in (Content Area) (Grade Level) developed by (Names of LT Members) of (Year & Section)
(Date of Submission)
Negative 12
And, positive 12 will become?

Doing that makes our equation

into 4x - x = 12 - 6.

3x
Performing the operations, 4x - x
is?

Six
And twelve minus six is?

Now, we have 3x = 6. To get the

value of x, we divide both sides
into three.

3x divided by three, left us with x

and Six divided three is two.
Hence the value of x is two.

No, ma’am.
Is this answers our problem?

That’s right. The last step that we

should do is to let x in the length
of our segments be equal to two.

14
This step will make the length of
PR be 4(2) + 6, and the length of
SR be 2 + 12, which is both
equal to?

Therefore, the length of PR and

SR is 14.

The first condition is just that

simple. Now, let’s move on to the
next condition. The second
condition states that if both pairs
of opposite angles of a
quadrilateral are congruent, then
the quadrilateral is a
parallelogram.

2PROFED07 Microteaching Plan Team Project

A Detailed Lesson Plan in (Content Area) (Grade Level) developed by (Names of LT Members) of (Year & Section)
(Date of Submission)
In this case, if ∠ A ≅ ∠ C and
∠B ≅ ∠D, then we can conclude
that the ABCD is a parallelogram.

Let’s apply this condition to a

problem.

KLMN is a parallelogram.
Compute for the measure of ∠ L
and ∠ N .

Ma’am, we compute first for the value of

x.
Does anyone have any idea of
what shall we do first?

That’s right. Since we know that

KLMN is a parallelogram, we
also know that ∠ L and ∠ N are
congruent. Therefore, we can
form an equation that x + 20 = 2x
- 30.
Separate the numbers with variables.

Can anyone recall the next step

after formulating an equation?
It will become negative 2x

Very Good, let’s now transpose

the terms. What will then happen
to positive 2x?
It will become negative 60.

And what will happen to positive

60?
Negative x

Our equation then became x - 2x

= -30 - 20. Performing the
2PROFED07 Microteaching Plan Team Project
A Detailed Lesson Plan in (Content Area) (Grade Level) developed by (Names of LT Members) of (Year & Section)
(Date of Submission)
operation, x minus 2x is equal
to?
Negative 50

And, Negative 30 plus Negative

20 is equal to?

We know that value of x should

be positive; hence we multiply
both sides of the equation to -1,
giving us a value of x that is
equal to 50. (pressed raised hand button)

Can anyone tell me what is now

then the measure of ∠ L and
∠ L and ∠N measure 70 °.
∠N ?

Yes, ma’am. I let x in the measurement

Yes, Mr. Santos?
of the angles be equal to 50. Hence, I
was able to get a measurement of 70
degrees for both ∠ L and ∠ N .
That’s right, Mr. Santos. Can you
explain to the class how did you
arrive at the correct
Yes, ma’am.
measurement?

Very good. Are the first two

Opposite sides are congruent, and
conditions clear?
Opposite angles are congruent.

Again, what are those first two

conditions for us to conclude that
the quadrilateral is a
parallelogram?

Very good.

Let’s continue our discussion

with the 3rd condition. If two
consecutive angles are
supplementary, then the
quadrilateral is a parallelogram.

Does anyone know the meaning

of the word supplementary?

We use the word Supplementary

2PROFED07 Microteaching Plan Team Project

A Detailed Lesson Plan in (Content Area) (Grade Level) developed by (Names of LT Members) of (Year & Section)
(Date of Submission)
to describe two angles which
measure sums up to 180°.

For example, if ∠ A and

∠ B each measures 90 ° . Then
we can say that ∠ A and ∠B are
supplementary angles since the
sum of 90° and 90° is equal to
180°. (pressed raised hand button)

How about if I say that ∠ A is

100°. Can anyone tell me the
measurement of the remaining
angles?

∠ B and ∠ D measures 80° while ∠C

also measures 100°

Yes, Ms. Sacapanio?

Yes, ma’am.

Very Good, Ms. Sacapanio. Is

the concept of supplementary
angles now clear to everybody?

That’s good. Let’s then apply the

3rd condition to a problem.

If EFGH is a parallelogram.
What is then the measurement of
∠ E and ∠ H?

2PROFED07 Microteaching Plan Team Project

A Detailed Lesson Plan in (Content Area) (Grade Level) developed by (Names of LT Members) of (Year & Section)
(Date of Submission)
Similar to the first problems, we
need to know first the value of x.
Since it is given that EFGH is a
parallelogram, and ∠ E and ∠ H
are consecutive angles, then we
also know that ∠E and ∠H are
supplementary angles. Hence,
we can form an equation that 4x -
10 + 2x + 40 = 180.

Again, let’s separate the

numbers with variable x from the
numbers which doesn’t have
one. Doing that will make our
equation 4x + 2x = 180 + 10 - 40. 6x

Adding 4x and 2x will result to? 150

And the result of 180 + 10 - 40 is

equal to?

Therefore, our equation is

reduced to 6x = 150. And, to get
the value of x, we need to divide
both sides of the equation to 6. Ma’am, it’s 25

Can anyone tell me what is then

our computed value of x?

That’s right. Now, we let x in the

measurement of ∠E and ∠ H be
equal to 25.

For ∠ E, our working equation

will be 4(25) - 10 = 110.
Therefore, the measure of ∠ E is It is also 90°.
90°.

For ∠ H , can anyone compute

for the measurement of it?

2PROFED07 Microteaching Plan Team Project

A Detailed Lesson Plan in (Content Area) (Grade Level) developed by (Names of LT Members) of (Year & Section)
(Date of Submission)
That’s right. If we want to verify if
our answer is correct, then the
sum of two computed angles
Yes, ma’am.
should be equal to 180°.

Is the sum of 90° and 90° equal

to
180°?

Therefore, our computed

measurement is correct.

Now, we go for the fourth

condition. The fourth condition
states that if the diagonals of a
quadrilateral bisect each other,
then the quadrilateral is a
parallelogram.

Let’s take this figure as an

example. The segment WY and
segment XZ are what we called
diagonals. Meanwhile, the word
bisects means diagonal WY cuts
diagonal XZ into two congruent
parts and vice versa; diagonal XZ
also cuts diagonals WY into two
congruent parts.

If it is given the WC ≅ CY
meaning they have an equal
measurement, and XC ≅ CZ ,
then we can already claim that
2PROFED07 Microteaching Plan Team Project
A Detailed Lesson Plan in (Content Area) (Grade Level) developed by (Names of LT Members) of (Year & Section)
(Date of Submission)
WXYZ is a parallelogram. Now,
let’s try solving a problem related
to the fourth condition.

If WXYZ is a parallelogram,
compute for the length of XC and
CZ in the figure.

Let’s compute again first the

value of x. Since it is given that
WXYZ is a parallelogram, we
know that XC ≅ CZ . Hence we
can form an equation that 4x - 5 4x - 3x = 5 + 5
= 3x + 5.

Let’s separate again the numbers

which have variables with it. Can
anyone dictate what will happen
to our equation?

Very Good. Now, performing the

operations in the equation will
give us a value of x that is equal Ma’am, the length of XC and CZ is 35.
to 10.

Can someone compute and tell

the class the length of XC and
CZ?

That’s right! With that, let’s

discuss the last condition. The
fifth condition states that if each
diagonal divides the quadrilateral
into two congruent triangles, then
the quadrilateral is a
parallelogram.

2PROFED07 Microteaching Plan Team Project

A Detailed Lesson Plan in (Content Area) (Grade Level) developed by (Names of LT Members) of (Year & Section)
(Date of Submission)
Take a look at this figure.
Diagonal AC forms two
congruent triangles, which are
triangle ABC and triangle ADC.
This means that∠ ABC and
∠ ADC have an equal
measurement. Similarly, diagonal
BD also forms two congruent
triangles, which are then triangle
BAD and triangle BCD. If that’s
the case, we can say that ABCD
is a parallelogram.

Let’s apply the concept to a

problem. If ABCD is a
parallelogram, what are then the
measures of ∠ BAD and
∠ BCD?

Given that ABCD is a

parallelogram, we know that
∠ BAD and ∠BCD are
congruent. We can then form an
equation that 12x + 1 = 2x + 21.

10x = 20
Again, let’s separate the terms
containing variables to one side
of the equation. This step makes
our equation into 12x - 2x = 21 -
1.
The value of x is equal to two.

Can anyone dictate the reduced

equation if we perform the
operations on both sides of the ∠BAD and ∠BCD both measure 25
equation? degrees.

That’s right! What is then the

value of our x?

And finally, can someone solve

and tell the class the computed
measurement of ∠BAD and
∠ BCD?

That’s right, Very Good.

Is everything clear? Does the

class have any questions
regarding the presentation?

6. 7.
8. 9. 10.Discussion
Okay, that’s good. To check if
you have really understood our
lesson today, let’s go back to our
activity a while ago. This time
instead of just guessing it, you
are now required to state the
correct reason why the given
figures are an example of a
parallelogram.

For figure number 1, can (pressed raised hand button)

someone tell me why this frame

13.14.15.Generalization
It seems like the class really
understood our lesson for today.
With that, let’s now wrap up what
we have discussed.

Will someone state again the five (pressed raised hand button)
conditions the make a
quadrilateral a parallelogram?

Go on, Ms. Sacapanio. The five conditions that make a

quadrilateral a parallelogram are
1. If both pairs of opposite sides are
congruent;
2. If both pairs of opposite angles are
congruent;
3. If two consecutive angles are
supplementary;
4. If the diagonals bisect each other; and
5. If each diagonal forms two congruent
triangles.

That’s excellent, Ms. Sacapanio.

Answer: A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if the two opposite sides of it are congruent.

Since the congruent sides are not opposite, the student should not claim that the
quadrilateral MATH is a parallelogram.

2. For what value of x is the pool, as shown in the figure, an example of a parallelogram.

Answer:
x + 10 + 2x + 30 = 180
3x = 180 - 30
3x = 150
x = 50

3. You are building a window. If SQ ≅ QT and it is written in cm. What should be the
length PQ and QR for you to say that the window is an example of a parallelogram.

Answer:
4x + 2 = 5x - 6
2 + 6 = 5x - 4x
x=8

PQ = 4x + 2
PQ = 4(8) + 2
PQ = 34

x be the measurement of ∠ A ; and
3x - 12 be the measurement of ∠ B

Since the adjacent angles of parallelogram are supplementary,

x + 3x - 12 = 180
4x = 192
x = 48

Therefore, ∠ A and ∠ C measure 48°, while ∠ B and ∠ D measure 132°.

5. Explain why the student should not claim that the figure below is a parallelogram.

Answer:
3x - 10 + x + 50 = 180
4x = 180 + 10 - 50
4x = 140
x = 35

Therefore,
∠ E = [3(35) - 10]°
∠ E = (105 - 10)°
∠ E = 95°

∠ H = (35 + 50) °
∠ H = 85 °

8. Prove that quadrilateral ABCD is a parallelogram by computing the measurement of ∠ A

and ∠ C.

Answer:
x + 10 = 5x - 6
10 + 6 = 5x - x
16 = 4x
x=4

∠ A = (x + 10)°
∠ A = 14°

Therefore, ∠ A and ∠ C measure 14°

9. Solve for the length of EF and HG by computing the value of x that will make the
quadrilateral a parallelogram.

Answer:
6x + 5 = x + 20
6x - x = 20 - 5
5x = 15
x=3

EF = 6(3) + 5
EF = 18 + 5
EF = 23

Therefore, the length of both EF and HG is 23.

10. Given that quadrilateral KLMN is a parallelogram, find the measurement of ∠ KLM and
∠ KNM.

Answer:

4x - 20 = 2x + 30
4x - 2x = 30 + 20
2x = 50
x = 25

∠ KLM = [4(25) - 20]°

∠ KLM = (100 - 20)°
∠ KLM = 80°

Therefore, ∠ KLM and ∠KNM measure 80°
