One of the applications of operational research is Production scheduling

Production Scheduling is the allocation of raw materials, resources, and processes

to produce products for customers.
The purpose of production scheduling is to make your manufacturing process flow
with maximum efficiency, by balancing your production needs with your available
resources in the most cost-effective manner.

Basically, One of the main component of production scheduling is

Routing sheet
routing sheet consists of a set of routing for shippable products or subassemblies
of the final product.
A route sheet is a document which lists the exact sequence of operations needed
to complete the job.
Route sheets provide the information to the material handlers to help them
move materials or partly completed items from one work center to another, until
the finished part or assembly reaches the shipping department.

Now days routing sheet is in electronic format, it can be easily converted into a
list of activities in the project scheduling software or ERP Software(Enterprise
resources planning). That activity list will be complete with all resources loaded.
Moving activity data from the routing sheet into the scheduling system can be
automated and can be performed in few moments even if the project is very
large.

CPM
In any process cpm….. can be considered as activity and routing sheet helps in
creating of activity of the process. Therefore, the routing sheet allows the
creation of the activity list complete with its duration, labor resources, machine
resources, and material resources.

Here we can see that Part C is the subassembly of part D. Part C is assembled by
welding parts A and B.If we consider Part A there are 4 different operations A1 as
cleaning, A2 as milling, A3 and A4 as bending, and heat treatment respectively.
Part B has only two operations drilling and grinding. Then the sequence will be
A1, A2, A3, A4, C1, C2, C3, D1.In parallel, there will be another sequence B1, B2,
C1, C2, C3, and D1. The activity sequencing can be easily generated and
automated.

Flow diagram….
 Here is the flow diagram which tell us about the flow of operation in
scheduling.

 In first step data from handmade routing sheet or routing sheet made from
erp system is collected.

 in the second step of operations like knowing the operation duration, no of

machine hrs , like how much time required to perform particular process
like 1hrs for milling, 2 hrs for grinding etc.

 leading to third step data manipulation which helps in adjusting the data to
make it organised and easier to understand.

 Then next is the creation of activity list from the routing sheet which will
complete all the resources allocated with specific process or ops

 Project control database here is the data management and analytical

process that helps in predicting and understanding to influence the time
and cost outcomes of a project, this happens through communication of
information

Q and A

Resource loading:- Your overall assigned hours of work divided by the amount of hours you have to
complete the work equals your resource loading.

Earned value measure

Gantt chart :- it is a graphical tool that helps operations managers schedule the activities and
determine the status of projects
Production Scheduling

Production scheduling is essential for growing manufacturing operations to

take their production to the next level.

Production Scheduling is the allocation of raw materials, resources, and

processes to produce products for customers.

The purpose of production scheduling is to make your manufacturing process

flow with maximum efficiency, by balancing your production needs with your
available resources in the most cost-effective manner.

For every project or product a unique routing sheet is always developed by the manufacturing
engineering team.

routing sheet consists of a set of routing for shippable products or subassemblies of the final product.

In the critical path method (CPM) world, each operation can be considered an activity. Therefore, the
routing sheet allows the creation of the activity list complete with its duration, labor resources, machine
resources, and material resources.

Part C is a subassembly of part D. Part C is assembled by welding parts A and B. Part A is a 40 feet tube.
It needs to 4 operations; cleaning, milling, bending, and heat treatment. Part B is a flange and needs only
two operations; drilling and grinding. Then the sequence will be A1, A2, A3, A4, C1, C2, C3, D1. In
parallel, there will be another sequence B1, B2, C1, C2, C3, D1
Here we can see that Part C is the subassembly of part D. Part C is assembled by welding parts A and B.If
we consider Part A there are 4 different operations A1 as cleaning, A2 as milling, A3 and A4 as bending,
and heat treatment respectively. Part B has only two operations drilling and grinding. In parallel, there
will be another sequence B1, B2, C1, C2, C3, and D1. The activity sequencing can be easily generated
and automated.

If the routing sheet is in electronic format, which is most probably the case, it can be easily converted
into a list of activities in the project scheduling software. That activity list will be complete with all
resources loaded. Moving activity data from the routing sheet into the scheduling system can be
automated and can be performed in few moments even if the project is very large.
